I steal a glance at Jesse as he drives me home. Honest to God, sex with him is incredibly hot and completely satisfying, yet I still want him again. Who knew underneath my sensible clothes a wild woman existed? I guess it took this man’s touch to bring her to life. Now that she’s alive, she’s sort of ruling my head…and maybe my heart.

Ugh.

I can’t go there. I won’t.

“Liv.”

“Yeah?”

“You’re quiet.” He casts me a glance. “Doing okay?”

“Just thinking.”

“About?”

Oh, about how crazy I am for you, how I have to move shortly, and even if I didn’t, we couldn’t be together anyway. There are numerous reasons we can’t be together, and the fact that he wants kids, and I can’t have them, was just one more.

“Hey,” he says, and reaches over to give my knee a squeeze. “What’s on your mind?”

“Colin,” I blurt out. I don’t want him to get the wrong idea here. You know, that I might just be using Colin as an excuse to sleep with him. What would Jesse think of me if he ever found out now. Sure, we’re both having fun, but honesty is important, to both of us.

“Right,” he says. “I was thinking about Colin too.”

“You got a crush on him?” I tease, anything to lighten the mood.

He gives a humorless chuckle. “If you’re leaving in a couple of months, and you guys do end up together before that…” He puts both hands back on the steering wheel. “Have you given your distance any thought?”

“Actually, no,” I say. It’s the truth. I’ve not given any thought to being far away from Colin. From Jesse, yes. But not Colin. “I guess we cross that bridge when we get to it.”

“Okay.” He stares straight ahead, hits his signal, and pulls into my driveway.

“Thanks.”

I’m about to reach for the handle, but he stops me. The dashboard light illuminates his face, as intense blue eyes full of questions lock on mine.

“Can I ask you a question?”

“Sure,” I say, and brace myself. Does he know? Does he know I’m into him, and not Colin?

“You said you can’t have kids. You never said anything like that to me before.” I nod, and stare straight ahead. “If you don’t want to talk about it, you don’t have to. It just really took me by surprise.”

“I found out a few years ago. I have very painful periods.” He nods like he understands that. “I had some tests done and found out I have scarring in my tubes from endometriosis. Chances of me having children are pretty slim.”

“I’m sorry,” he says, his hand sliding across the seat to capture mine. “But there are other ways if you want children.”

“Yeah, I know,” I say lightly as my insides coil into a tight knot. “There’s always in vitro, but it’s costly, not a sure thing, and I kind of need a guy for that.”

“True.” He looks down, like he’s giving it serious consideration. “You want kids, don’t you?”

“I just sort of put the idea aside, you know.
