“She’s in a lot of trouble,” the guy from the tac unit told Rock the first thing the next morning.

Rock leaned his elbows on the paperwork he was supposed to be finishing and dropped his head into his hands. He’d sent out the feelers on the case, just to see if anything on it rang bells. He especially wanted to know if anybody had personally tangled with one Sonny Varner, the name that went with the face Lee had picked out of thousands as the man who had torn apart her apartment trying to get to her.

Rock had gotten the message the minute he’d walked in to call Jim Pierson from the tactical units, which did all the special investigations from the State Street bureau.

“Why?” Rock asked. “What do you have to tell me about this guy?”

“Oh, I know Sonny from way back. He started out doing nickel-and-dime stuff, but since his last time in, he’s graduated to the big leagues. Anything for the right price, and I mean anything. He’s mean and he’s good and if he isn’t smart, at least he’s thorough.”

“Thorough?”

“If he didn’t find what he wants, he’ll be back.”

“Wonderful. Any connection to the family?”

“Not anything that set off bells, but I wouldn’t put anything past him. He likes to think big, and every so often they have need for outside talent.”

Without even thinking about it, Rock drew a slow circle around the third name on the list of suspects he’d started to compile.

“I saw your inquiry on the original hit and run,” Jim said. “Your girl have her insurance with Global Trans?”

“Don’t think so. Why?”

“Just thought I’d check. We’re looking into them for fraud. They’re paying off on some pretty questionable accidents lately, several in your area, and the injuries are a lot like your lady’s.”

Rock checked his files. “I’d be real surprised if she’s involved in anything like that, but I’ll make sure.”

He made the note, even though he didn’t want to.

“I’m checking out that theater angle you gave us,” Jim said. “Thanks, it’s just the kind of stuff we’re looking for. Coincidences like that make my palm itch, ya know?”

Rock nodded. “Yeah. I know. Do you have anything on this Holliwell?”

“Not yet. But I can’t imagine Mario Gianini’s second cousin not finding his way to Mario’s very deep pockets for some support.” The officer chuckled, obviously enjoying himself. “God, I love this stuff.”

Rock hung up the phone a few minutes later wondering whether he was supposed to feel any better or not. He didn’t have to wait long to find out. O’Banyon showed up on the other side of his desk, a frown on his heavy features, an interview report in his hand.

“You were right,” he said without preamble. “The times don’t match on when the girl disappeared. It can’t be that guy in Indiana. Now, you want to tell me where you think that damn shoe is?”

And Rock, who didn’t think he could feel any worse, told him.
