* * *

It is after midnight in relatively quiet Belgrade. Joan and Philip are in bed. Joan has just returned from a field trip. Florian has not been in touch for several days, but that’s not significant. His last-known treff was with a Serb Colonel of Artillery. The product was good enough to earn a herogram from Head Office. The green phone rings at their bedside: agents only, and only in extremis. Joan, the Station’s Head Agent-runner, takes the call:

‘I get this husky voice: This is Florian. Florian? I say. Who’s Florian? Never heard of you. I mean, the idea that it might be Edward, at that point, never even occurred to me. It didn’t sound like Florian. I wasn’t even sure he knew his own codename. My first thought was, Florian’s been taken hostage and this is his hostage-taker. Then I hear: It’s over, Joan, in this absolutely flat, foreign voice. Philip’s on the extension by now, aren’t you, darling?’

‘Keep him talking, only thing to do,’ Philip replied. ‘He knows Florian. He knows Joan. So the bugger’s on to something. I signalled to her, keep him talking’ – fingers and thumb wagging – ‘keep him talking while I get the operator to trace the call.’

‘Which of course was exactly what I was doing already,’ Joan said. ‘Challenge him, I thought. Who’s Joan? I said. What’s over? Tell me who you are and I’ll tell you whether you’ve got the right number. Then suddenly he’s Edward. And this time I know it’s Edward, because he’s not being Polish or anything else, it’s his proper voice. They’ve killed them, Joan. They killed Faisal and the boy. And I say, that’s awful, Edward, where are you, and why are you using this line? And he says he’s in the village. Which village? I ask him. His village. And finally I get its name out of him.’
