And my name’s King George V, Ben thought with a sneer. As if Jacob would tell him his man’s real name.

The street outside was quiet, like the rest of Headington at this time of the night. Ben heard the noise of the car outside and parted the blinds. A balding man stepped out of a two-seater BMW. He didn’t look like a gangster. For starters, he wore a tweed coat. In the streetlight, Ben could see his soft white hands and sloping shoulders. This guy looked more like an accountant than anything else. That made him breathe easier. He opened his door and slipped outside. There was a dark landing; the bulb that gave light was on the blink. Opposite there was a staircase. Ben left his door open, but turned off the light in his room. He stole up the staircase swiftly, his rubber-soled shoes not making a sound. He had a hammer in his hand, purchased earlier from a hardware store.

The man came up the stairs. He paused at the dark landing. There were only two doors for him to knock on, and only one that was open and also had the correct door number. It didn’t take him long to go forward and knock on number seven.

Slowly, Ben uncoiled himself down the stairs, silent as a mouse. The man knocked on his door. Light from the street fell into the landing.

‘Benjamin? Are you there?’ the man said. He sounded nervous. He knocked on the door again, then stopped as he realised it was open. The time was now. Ben flew down the last couple of stairs and launched himself on the man. They crashed into his room, falling on the floor. Ben had the advantage of surprise. He was on the man’s back, and he swung the hammer to hit the man on the back of his skull. He didn’t hit him too hard; he didn’t want him to die.

He punched him as well for good measure, and the man went limp. Ben shut the door. The other door across the landing remained closed. He turned the light on, making sure the man was unconscious, and frisked the man’s pockets. He found a card holder with two credit cards and a driving licence. The man’s name was Charles Topley.

‘John my arse,’ Ben muttered to himself. He put the card holder and the car keys in his pocket. He ripped off some bedsheets and tied Charles’s hands and feet together. He opened his mouth and stuffed cloth inside it. He had packed his single holdall bag already. He shut the door, but didn’t lock it. He didn’t want this guy to die. His ties were loose, and when he came to, he could get on his feet with some effort. When Ben took his pulse, it was strong.

He went out the door and stole down the stairs. He put his holdall in the rear of the BMW. The gas tank was full. He revved the engine of the Z4 once, enjoying the sound, then felt like an idiot immediately.
