‘Pop?’
The top of my grandfather’s bedside drawer was cleared of the bits and pieces he normally kept there, like his favourite aftershave, his cough lollies, his picture of Nana and me hugging beneath an old apple tree, and his box of tissues with pictures of penguins on it.
My heart beat furiously against my chest.
No. No. No.
He had to be okay. Perhaps the nurses had decided to give his side of the room a good clean. They may have moved him to sit in the communal living area. That must have been it.
Just to be certain, I checked the bedside drawers for the piles of books Pop kept in there.
My blood ran cold.
Empty.
‘Pop!’
Panic made my breath short. What if something had happened to Pop because of me. Because of what I’d done last night. Had those women somehow gotten to Pop? Had they done something to him? The blonde woman’s fangs, and the way her eyes had glowed... She’d said she was a vampire. What if...
I glanced at Pop’s room-mate, an elderly man with a full head of thick, white hair, for any kind of clue as to what had happened to my grandfather. But he shrugged his shoulders at my silent question and returned his watery blue eyes back to the television game-show he was watching.
I sucked in a deep breath to calm myself.
The room smelled bad. Worse than usual. Perhaps Pop had messed himself. Yes of course. And perhaps they’d had to take everything out to give the room a good disinfecting.
‘Where did they take my grandad?’ I asked Pop’s room-mate.
The man didn’t answer. He just swore filthily when the game-player got the question wrong on TV.
I ran out of the room and caught a nurse rushing down the hall, a balled up bundle of sheets in her arms.
The sheets smelled so bad I had to breathe through my mouth.
‘Excuse me. Where’s my grandad? Mr Samuel Davies.’
The woman sighed.
‘He was moved to high-care yesterday,’ she said, before continuing on her way. I had to chase her to get more information.
My heart beat a hole in my chest for new reasons now. The threat of vampires was promptly forgotten.
Not high care. Anywhere but there. Residents were regularly strapped to their beds in high care. I couldn’t bear my grandad being tied to his bed day after day.
‘Why wasn’t I notified of this? And why high care? He was fine the last time I saw him.’
The nurse frowned and pursed her lips before responding.
‘He was only moved last night, after he managed to somehow get outside and into the carpark.’ The woman frowned and shook her head. ‘A couple found him sitting in the driver’s seat of their car.’
Clarissa felt her insides crumble. Poor Pop.
‘Well, how is that his fault? Why wasn’t anybody watching him? And that couple should have locked their car.’
Those pursed lips again. The woman caught sight of the hamburger package and my arms loaded with shopping.
‘Is there anything else I can help you with? I need to get going.
