Pop music thumped through the luxurious penthouse Madison had rented on Air BnB for Sydney’s bachelorette party, the women all dancing and laughing, glasses of champagne lifted high in the air. Some of the bridesmaids were local, like Sydney’s med school friends Emily and Alexis, while others were from out of town, like her college bestie Tori, who was living in Portland, and her two childhood girlfriends, Alyssa and Courtney—Alyssa was still local, but Courtney lived in San Francisco now. But either way, Madison had wanted to pull out all of the stops for Sydney’s bachelorette, and instead of staying in a hotel, she’d rented them a gorgeous penthouse with stunning views of Central Park. It had stretched her budget to do it, but it was worth it to give Sydney the party she deserved. She knew that Sydney would do the same for her.

They’d started the day with a fancy brunch at one of Sydney’s favorite restaurants, followed by an afternoon of pampering at a posh spa—facials, massages, and mani-pedis to prepare them for the night of partying to come. Now they were getting ready to go out, getting dressed and putting on makeup while drinking, dancing, and laughing. She’d managed to snag them a VIP table at Boulevard, one of Manhattan’s most popular nightclubs. It had been a while since Madison had enjoyed a good pregame, which served to remind her of just how sad her social life was these days, given that almost all of her friends had decided to stick with Brock and his circle of money and VIP treatment. It felt good to be with a group of women, indulging in girl talk and gossip and feeling that buzz that came with being surrounded with positive feminine energy.

Sydney did a twirl as she stepped into the living room, smoothing her hands down the front of her white cocktail dress.

“EEEEEEEEEEEE,” screeched Alexis, jumping up and down, her Velcro rollers flopping around on top of her head. “You look so bridey! It’s perfect.”

Madison grinned and grabbed for the large shopping bag on the couch beside her. “You look amazing. But you need some accessories.” She wiggled her eyebrows, feeling playful. Mischievous. It had been a long time since she’d felt like this.

Sydney’s eyes widened. “Oh, no. Maddy. What did you do?”

Madison moved closer to her, still grinning. “My job as maid of honor, girl.” She pulled out a white satin sash with the words “Bride to Be” scrolling across it in gold script. Sydney giggled as Madison passed it to Tori, who helped loop it over her head, carefully avoiding the pin curls still in Sydney’s hair.

“I think she needs a necklace, too,” said Madison, retrieving a hot pink plastic necklace from inside the bag. She flipped a switch on the back of it and the giant pink penis at the end began flashing.

“Oh, good Lord,” said Sydney, pressing a hand to her face. “I’m not wearing that.”

“Yes, you are,” said Madison, reaching into the bag again. “We all are.
