The landline won't stop ringing.

“Ignore it again!” Mom calls out from her throne at the kitchen table. “It's more of the biddies.”

“They won't stop calling!” Carol complains. The front door opens and Shannon appears, holding a squirming, adorable preschooler on one hip and a bag of groceries on the other.

“Do they want an invitation because David Beckham's taller ginger twin is here?” Shannon asks, slightly out of breath. Her three-year-old, Ellie, makes a beeline for Mom.

“Oof!” Mom says as Ellie climbs into her lap. Declan appears behind Shannon, deposits a large box on the kitchen counter, and follows their daughter, helping to balance her so Mom's not in pain.

He plants a quick kiss on Mom's cheek as well, which makes me smile.

Having a billionaire for a brother-in-law is objectively weird. No one warns you growing up that one of your siblings might fall in love with an extraordinarily powerful and wealthy man, and that one day you'll be spending holidays with him, all using the same bathroom from your childhood, listening to him brush his teeth, watching him show up in Armani suits but end up playing touch football in the back yard with your nephews.

In the years they've been together, he's changed. Thawed a lot, and become less judgmental. Shannon's changed, too. Having all the money you could ever want hasn’t spoiled her, but it's got to be nice.

And they share it, too.

In May, I'll graduate with my MBA and no debt. How many people my age can say that? And being an in-law to the famous McCormick family means having business connections I could only dream of before, when I was a part-time undergrad struggling to make all the money columns line up.

Declan and Shannon covered my tuition.

I'm grateful, and I have to prove that I was a worthy investment.

“I still don't understand why we didn't just have everything delivered here,” Declan says to Shannon as she's hugging us all. I drop the spreadsheets in my hand and give her a good squeeze. By the end of the day, we won't have the arm strength to hug a marshmallow.

“Because Dad's eyes would have bugged out if he'd seen what it cost.”

“Still? We still have to play this game?”

We all nod.

If I struggle sometimes with the whole billionaire-family-member thing, Dad's even worse.

“Dave had everything delivered to the trunk of our SUV. This wasn't so hard. Think of it as a mini workout,” she says, giving him a quick smooch and a butt pat. “Big, strong caveman carrying provisions from the car to the kitchen. Grunt, grunt.”

He relaxes microscopically and gives her the same, only he bends her back into a dip. Their kiss turns hotter by the second. By the time Dad and Hamish come back in from the man cave, they’ve moved from “cute, hot kiss” into “I think her gum is in his mouth now” territory.

“She needs oxygen, Dec,” Dad says drily. He grins and shakes his head, moving around them.

Hamish stops and stares at them, surprisingly serious.
