Most of us try to stay in our comfort zone, where we appear to have a measure of control, and in the company of people we understand and trust. Whenever possible, we avoid uncertainty, ambiguity, and surprises.

Some, however—with performers prominently among them—are exiled by birth or circumstance. Since family relationships, where most of us find security, acceptance, and a sense of belonging, are closed off to them, they try to win public approval through exceptional achievements, and keep risking failure in hope of validation. But even when they succeed, the affirmation is likely to be temporary. Their self-doubt and anxiety are but briefly allayed, and soon drives them back onto the high-wire.

A highly accomplished juggler says, “A juggler is not a secure person. The juggler, by definition, should be . . . insecure.”25
