CHAPTER TEN
Brandon got into his truck the next day and headed for Nashville. Twice he almost turned around—once to go back to Wild R and beg to stay there, and once to find a road he’d never been down and just keep driving.
But somehow he kept himself on the path Jonah had railroaded him into—to be fair, Tristan clearly had a hand in it too. How the little shit must have been laughing about that. Brandon still couldn’t believe he was really doing this, although it would be worth it if he figured out how to get Zach to listen to him. But how was that going to happen? Was Tristan going to have some brilliant relationship advice? Brandon rolled his eyes at the absurd thought.
Somehow he’d get through the next few days, do some temp work with a roofing crew Tristan had found for him, and not punch Tristan when he mouthed off. And then he’d go back to Wild R and control his fucking temper like he’d been doing for the last few months. If he was wise he’d just forget about Zach, too.
The snarky voice inside him, the one that saw all his insecurities, fears, and fuck ups, snorted at that thought.
He slammed his hand against the steering wheel as he remembered the pain in Zach’s eyes, the look that had made him lose it and grab Zach for the kiss he desperately needed.
He kissed you back.
What difference does it make if he won’t try to work things out?
He hasn’t given up on you.
Brandon deliberately made a noise like a disgusted horse. Yes, he has. And he’s right to.
He turned down the street where Tristan and Wes lived and saw Wes finishing up a run. Wes glanced at the truck and then looked again, obviously realizing it was Brandon. He lifted a hand to wave but didn’t look particularly friendly.
This was a fucking mistake.
Brandon pulled into the driveway and sat in his truck, trying to talk himself into getting out and facing whatever Wes was going to say. Before he had a chance, Wes jogged up alongside the vehicle and tapped on the window. Brandon reluctantly rolled it down.
Wes frowned and pointed at the duffle on the seat. “You gonna be staying here?”
Oh fuck, he was going to kill Tristan if Wes didn’t kill the bastard first. “Tristan didn’t tell you he invited me to stay?”
“He told me.”
That was a relief.
“We don’t keep secrets from each other,” Wes continued. “I just didn’t think you’d be crazy enough to take him up on the offer.”
Of course they didn’t keep secrets. Wasn’t that cute. “I guess I’m crazier than you thought, then.” Or more desperate.
“I guess you are.”
“Look I—”
Wes leaned against the window, flexing his muscles. He might be fully human but his attitude reminded Brandon of an alpha wolf. He’d probably learned the behavior from years as Cole’s best friend. Wes couldn’t take Brandon in a fight but he was still intimidating as hell and a damn good shot.
