Chapter Six

Fifteen years. The first time Phelan had lived through them, they'd passed in a blur, to the point where he hadn't even been able to measure them any longer. In some ways, it had been easier—or at the very least, simpler. He didn't have to think too much about what he was doing. He'd just needed to survive.

He wasn't so lucky this time around. When Phelan returned the night of his failed quest, it had occurred to him that the curse had all been for a reason. Whether or not Elian remember him—and gods, had it hurt to see the human turn away from him—the fact remained that he knew things could not go on as they had been.

And so, Phelan decided to change it all, if not for himself, then for everyone else who had died, and maybe for Elian.

It was not easy, and many times Phelan felt he was fighting a losing battle. His father was stubborn and unwilling to change his ways without a good reason. Finally, after weeks of arguments turned into months without progress, Phelan pulled his parents aside and made a decision.

"I have to tell you something, but I want you to consider it carefully and not be rash over what course of action you take."

His parents shared a look, and then turned toward him once more. "Very well, son," his father said, his voice soft for the first time since the ball.

Phelan swallowed around the knot in his throat and braced himself for what he knew would be a difficult conversation. He spoke of the shifter furs that decorated the walls of the citadel that had once housed their civilization. It all became even harder when he reached the point of his life when he'd met Elian.

It was a minor miracle that his parents listened until he was done. All things considered, he was not surprised by their reaction. His mother gripped his arm in a deceptively soft hold. "I think you need to sit down, son. You've been working too hard."

Phelan had expected them thinking he was mad. That didn't mean it didn't irritate him to see them dismiss years and years of pain just like that.

He struggled to control his temper, knowing shouting at them wouldn't do him any favors. "Mother, be straightforward with me. We are shifters. We have amazing gifts, but we are, in the end, mortal. Why is it difficult for you to accept that there is a greater power out there when you know our gifts didn't come out of nowhere?"

It was a question she didn't have an answer to. She stayed silent, looking just as confused as Phelan had felt when the witch had first asked him why he couldn't take a human mate.

His father did, however, have a reply. "Phelan, you can't honestly expect us to believe such an outlandish tale. Yes,
