Adrenaline pumped in Luna's veins as she soared through the trees, racing away from her father as quickly as possible. How dare he try to sell her like this without even consulting her first? He knew she didn't like Alen, but he was so caught up in what he wanted that he didn't care about her anymore.

This wasn't like Clyde at all. Though he tried to control Luna, she knew he loved her deeply, like a father should. There had to be more to this issue than their jeopardized hunting grounds ... but if she stayed here to get to the bottom of it, she'd be married off before she could find the truth.

She had to escape, uncover the truth, and return later. Or, at the very least, she had to find another way to keep her people safe. She couldn't just abandon them, but if she wasn't there ... Clyde couldn't make the mistake of merging their clan with the Sun Elves.

Branches scraped Luna's arms and legs as she ran deeper into the trees. Southwest, toward the mythical human city of Coeur d'Alene. She hoped she was going in that direction, at least. The canopy was so thick overhead that she couldn't tell which direction she was going anymore. So long as it was away from her father, from her village ... it didn't matter right now.

Away. Further away.

Her foot snagged on the underbrush and she fell face-first into the bushes. Leaves and branches scraped her face and body, and she rolled into the dirt, breathing heavily. A thin film of sweat covered her body, and dust and leaves stuck to her skin and hair.

Luna lay flat on the ground and squeezed her eyes shut to catch her breath and quell her growing panic. Had she gotten far enough away? The hunters in her clan were skilled trackers, so they would pick up her trail ... she had to keep moving, but she'd never run so hard in her life. She didn't know how much longer she could keep it up.

With a deep breath, she attuned her senses to the environment. Crickets sang from the bushes after she'd stopped running. A slight breeze whistled through the trees. But ... no hunters yet. At some point, she outran Clyde. He would have to go back to the village to recruit hunters to come find her, which meant she had at least a half-hour headstart. She could spare a moment to catch her breath, to come up with a real plan.

Really, though, what else was there for her to plan? She had to get out of the woods, but she'd never gone out of Moon Elf territory before. Already she neared the edge, so in less than fifteen more minutes of travel, she would be in an unfamiliar land. There could be humans there. She could get lost, unable to find her way home.

She bit her lip at the thought. Was home her home anymore?

Not so long as her father wanted to force her into a marriage she didn't want.
