17 Dan

Dan blinked his eyes as consciousness began to return. He wasn't in his cabin. And he wasn't alone. Instead, his arms were full of Emily, her soft hair tickling his nostrils, her warm body wrapped around his. He didn't think she had moved at all in the night, just stayed in his arms, where she really did seem to belong.

It was real, then. Last night hadn't been just a wonderful - and highly erotic - dream. It had really happened. The cure was close enough that he could let himself have the happiness that Emily wanted to give him. For some insane reason that he couldn't begin to fathom, Emily wanted him. Not just wanted him, but liked him. Truly cared about him, wanted to be with him.

And he would have been a far greater fool than he liked to think he was to let that pass him by. Especially now that a real cure was right within his grasp.

Emily stirred in his arms, letting out a soft snuffling sound that was honestly very cute. She scrunched up her face and opened her eyes to look at him.

"Good morning," she said softly, her lips curling into a smile.

"Hi," Dan said, feeling almost dumbstruck. She was really here, not running away from him. Emily was smiling, happy, relaxed in his arms. And there was no reason why she couldn't stay that way, Dan thought. The cure was real. Hilda, Wade's contact, was the real deal, Dan was sure of that. And he could be happy, happy with Emily. She'd never need to know about his condition.

"You know, I slept really well," Emily said, tracing a finger over his chest in the dim light. "I think you're some kind of orthopaedic device, secretly."

Dan chuckled, tightening his arm around her. "Is that so?" he said. "I'm just glad I wasn't snoring."

"No snoring," Emily confirmed. "I would have let you know if you were."

"I have no doubt that you would," Dan said, a grin coming over his face. She would, too. Emily would always challenge him, wouldn't let him get away with bad behaviour of any kind, even in his sleep.

"What time is it?" Emily asked, leaning up to look at the clock. "Please don't tell me we have to get up right away."

"It's early," Dan assured her. "Don't worry, I'm not making you miss breakfast."

"Oh, I can live without breakfast," Emily said, smiling. "But I'd feel guilty if I didn't make it to the workshop sessions today."

"I had a feeling you might say that," Dan said. "You're too conscientious. I can't convince you to just stay in bed until the hotel kicks us out?"

Emily made a face. "That's incredibly tempting," she said, as though considering. "But . . . Melissa, vague as she is, sponsored me to be here. I don't think spending the whole time in bed with you is what she had in mind."

"That's a fair point," Dan admitted. "But I do wish you were less fastidious."

"Believe me, so do I!" Emily laughed.
