Chapter Fourteen

Fane’s voice penetrated the fog, calling to him. His love sounded troubled. As if he was running from something. The vision of wolves chasing his lover momentarily blinded him, causing him to stumble on the uneven ground. Leaves crackled beneath his feet. The air was thick with danger.

Time seemed to stand still for a long while, he was lost again. Searching for Fane in the fog, he couldn’t see his hand in front of his face much less find his love. The sound of wolves howling in the distance caught his attention and he followed. The angry yowl of a large cat slashed through the fog. Fane was angry. He had to hurry to save him.

The scene changed, he stumbled across powder white sand. Smoke filled the air now. The scent of burning wood caught his nose. An explosion rent the air. Fane screamed. He was flung back into the surf. Another like him with dark hair and powerful body pulled him to dry land and up the hill to a bunker. Fane bled from his side and one leg. He’d taken in too much salt water. The other saved him. He stayed with him through the night as the shelling continued. The next morning he looked up to find a woman, a dark haired beauty standing over them.

“Which of you is the Alpha?” she asked hands on hips. Something about her seemed familiar to him. Her voice was the same as—the other one answered that he was and put himself in front of Fane. Lightning split the air and he lay in the dirt. His eyes open. He saw nothing more. The men with her took Fane from the bunker to the remains of the light house. The keeper’s cottage became his prison. She healed his wounds almost completely. The Yankee captain coming to see the prisoners each morning. She was upset when told to prepare him for transporting to a prison. The others were already on the ship or gone. When the Yank was gone she removed her clothing and crawled over his lover, fondling him. Fane’s terror and shame washed over him. She wanted children from him. She would keep him from the prison, he would forget the lover in time. Fane shifted into his true form. The rope around his neck kept him from escaping. She called him vile names and said he’d pay the ultimate price for spurning her. She’d find another Alpha. She’d have a powerful child. It was her destiny.

Fane’s pain as he changed ripped him to shreds. He lay panting. His body ached from hunger and loneliness. His mind changed. Food, shelter, food, days, months, years passed he forgot. He forgot his brother. His mother. Alpha. He could smell the body under the hill. He mourned that scent. He went every day to lie on the hill in the sand. He promised the scent something. Except he forgot that too. He remembered one thing.

Isolde. Evil was named Isolde. Marchand. He would remember that.
