I slept on the couch that night. And the next. When I woke up, there was a blanket over me that hadn’t been there before, and it smelled like Andrei. That scent was now inextricably linked to the mind-melding bliss of being buried inside of him. Like I’d needed one more thing to complicate feelings that should’ve been simple. Cut and dry.

I’d fucked so many people. Men and women. Even a vamp or two when I didn’t have the itch to hunt one who fed with discretion. Catching feelings had never been a concern of mine. Sex was mechanical. Something I did to satisfy a hunger, like eating or drinking. The ability to feel intimacy had been stolen from me long before I was ready, and every encounter I’d had since was a way to reassert control, nothing less and nothing more.

This… this was something different. I’d miscalculated, thinking that a one-time fuck would be enough to purge me of the irrational feelings that lingered where he was concerned. All it had done was cement them.

I was still going to kill him. It was just going to be a hell of a lot more inconvenient with the memory of what it was like to try so hard not to hurt him. To take pleasure from knowing he wanted me to.

Avoiding him proved difficult in a one-bedroom apartment, but as the days turned to weeks, even I lost track of who was the captor and who was the prisoner.

If things had ever been that simple, life would be so much easier. So would death.

At least he’d started letting me shower in peace. Guess he knew I wasn’t going anywhere. Not when we still had a score to settle.

And here I was, jonesing to fuck him one last time before I put a bullet in his heart. Fuck me.

My wounds were healing and my body was getting stronger day by day. I was already good enough to do what I needed to do, but I found myself putting it off. When I found him at the table with my prosthetic in front of him, I realized I’d let the game go on a bit too long.

Hadn’t expected him to be the first one to call it quits, but maybe our little purgatory had become more hell for him than heaven.

“I fixed what I could,” he said quietly. I walked close enough to see the pale tinted resin filling the cracks his fangs had put in the nearly indestructible plastic.

“You’re giving this back to me?”

“I shouldn’t have taken it in the first place.” His tone was flat with guilt. I reluctantly picked up the prosthetic and pushed it back into place. The mechanics inside still worked fine, even if stretching my hand out was a bit stiff. I’d need to have Emil fix it when I got back, but it was workable.

“You’re better,” he remarked.

I stared at him, still flexing my hand to adjust. He definitely wasn’t a pro, but he hadn’t done a half-bad job.
