Chapter 22

Avery

The first thing I did when I woke up Friday morning was check in on the group chat again. Just as I expected, a flurry of messages had arrived overnight and in the early hours of the morning. All four of my best friends had tossed their two cents in and were looking for every bit of information I would give them.

I hadn’t put many details in the chat. There were things that just shouldn’t be typed out into a phone. They got the general idea, and a couple of brief, largely noncommittal responses to questions. But I knew they weren’t going to settle for that. There was absolutely no stretch of the imagination that allowed for these women to just take the little morsels of information I gave them and be fine with it.

It was a beneficial arrangement. It was also one that came with few, if any, boundaries. That meant I already knew it wouldn’t be too long before the women showed up looking for a full debriefing.

It surprised me when I got to the studio morning and Beth didn’t rush me. Like what happened on a lot of mornings, we showed up at basically the same time and greeted each other as we unlocked the doors to our businesses. I hesitated just inside the door to the studio, waiting for her to run from her door to mine, but she didn’t.

Then, I waited for her to come through the adjoining door. Perhaps she was after a more clandestine approach to getting a head start on all the details. When she didn’t come, I figured that meant the four of them had some sort of agreement. Just one of them wasn’t allowed to hear the story. They all needed to hear it at the same time.

I didn’t have to wait too long to find out when they would appear. Just as I was about to close up for lunch and go over to the health food shop to see if Beth wanted to grab something, I saw Simone pop her head into the studio.

“Hey,” I said. “How are you doing?”

“I’m good,” she said. “How about you?”

Her voice was just on the edge of sounding sing-songy.

“Good,” I said. “I was just getting ready to have lunch.”

“Do you have plans?”

“No, I was actually just going to go over to see Beth and find out what she was doing.”

“I’m not doing anything,” Beth said, sticking her head in next to Simone’s.

“Oh,” I said, both startled and amused by her sudden appearance. “Well, then I guess I’m not doing anything, either.”

“She’s not doing anything,” Simone called over her shoulder to what I could only assume was Tara and Kathy waiting on the sidewalk. “Come on.”

The door opened the rest of the way, and all four streamed in. Tara was carrying two bags from one of our favorite lunch places, and Kathy turned the lock on the door as soon as she was inside.

“Did you just lock the door?” I asked.

“We have a whole lot of conversation ahead of us,” Simone said.
