Brian asked me if we could try again Sunday when we were all home from church. We both really wanted our marriage. We needed to forgive one another and recognize that this was a season in our marriage and we were going to get through it if we were faithful. He promised to put more effort into coming home at a decent time and not hanging out after work. I was putting my best effort into losing weight, shopping less, and keeping the house clean. We both agreed to make each other a top priority. There didn’t seem to be a good compromise to our church situation. I told him I wouldn’t be back to Good Shepard. I had not mentioned Hope Church, yet. I had to wait until the time was right. I wasn’t sure if I could trust Brian with my heart. Everything was about appearances with him. In the past, his words said one thing but his actions did another.
For the past three days, I had been thinking non-stop about my experience at church. I was so moved by the word and the people I wanted to tell everyone. Jade was out of town again and I couldn’t tell Brian. Michael was busy running a new cleaning contract job. I did not know who to share my story with. Here I was at home with the children all day, as usual. The home school mom’s I met spent more time whining about their children’s behaviors than building friendships. So, that was a no go. Then my iPhone rang.
Glancing down at my caller id, I dropped my cell phone when I realized it said Paul Barrett. One of the pastors was calling my cell. I picked up the phone and answered nervously, “Hello?”
“Yes, I am trying to reach Sharay Franklin,” said a pleasant female voice.
“This is she.”
“Sharay!” I could hear the smile in Pastor Barb’s voice, “I enjoyed meeting you on Sunday, but I want to get right to the point.
“Do you have a minute?”
“Sure.”
“Pastor Paul and I would like to meet with you tonight before bible study.
“What time?” I asked.
“At six o’clock.”
I panicked a little. What would this meeting be about and what would I do with the kids? Would Michael be there? What would happen? Instead of asking those questions, I said, “Yes, I will be there.”
“Great, see you then.”
I stumbled through the rest of the day. Terrance and BJ kept asking me if I was okay. They had never seen me sit under a fan or wipe my sweat with a face towel. I marked their assignments wrong when they were right and gave smiley face stickers on papers that were not done correctly. I eventually gave up and ended school early, allowing the children to play.
I did not want Brian to know where I was going. He would ask too many questions. Vanessa had called my home and her cell number kept showing up on the caller id. I could definitely use her for an alibi but what about the children? I decided to take them with me.
