Double Trouble in York

A fortnight had passed since Holmes abruptly rose from our dinner table at 221B Baker Street and with a cool tone bordering on indifference, said to me, “Watson, I will be taking leave of London for what is, as of yet, an undetermined period of time. I shall make contact with you through the post once I have solidified my itinerary.”

Caught entirely off guard by Holmes’ announcement, I hastily placed my cup back on its saucer spilling some of its contents on to the tablecloth.

“Where are you off too?” I asked.

“It is nothing you need concern yourself with, Watson.”

“What about the report that you are due to deliver to Mr. Daniels solicitor? He is expecting it by tomorrow afternoon.”

“As I said, no need to concern yourself, I have already had the report and all ancillary dossiers delivered to him earlier today. Also, I have left word with Wiggins as to my departure. You need not worry about being bothered needlessly during my absence.”

“But Holmes,” I said, “If there is anything that I can do, I assure you it is no bother.”

“Time is running short, Watson, save your socially guided sentiments for a more opportune time. I must be off.”

With those words, he grabbed two bags from his bedroom that he had obviously packed earlier, descended down the stairs, went out the front door and boarded a hansom that was already in wait on the street. I followed closely behind him and barely had an opportunity to wave farewell as the driver coaxed the horses to ride off at a brisk pace.

I made my way back up the stairs to find Mrs. Hudson waiting for me at my doorway. ”Where was he off too in such a dash?” She asked.

“Mrs. Hudson, in these past few years of having known Holmes, having lived under the same roof, having shared multiple adventures in tandem – if those experiences have taught me anything, it is that I can scarcely know what is going on with him when he tells me, much less when he keeps it in mystery. My dear woman, I know not what game is afoot this time.”

“Never you mind Dr. Watson. I am certain that we will know soon enough”. With that, we both smiled and bade each other a good night.

Starting two days after his departure, and in every morning post hence, I received a letter from Holmes. The content of those letters seemed entirely trivial when I placed them in context with their author. Observations about the countryside, commentary on the culinary talents of the kitchen staff of the hotel where he had been lodged in York and other mundane ramblings that were completely out of character for my friend. At times, I questioned if he had actually penned those words himself. The handwriting appeared to be indisputably his own, therefore, I continued to function under the premise that Holmes had found a method to enjoy repose and recreation. Otherwise, this whole affair was most likely part of something sinister that he was investigating.
