“So,” said he, smiling, “it was you, then. I thought that it must be you when I saw the door open.”
“Oh, I am so frightened!” I said.
“My dear young lady! My dear young lady!” - His voice was so calm and gentle – “And what has frightened you, my dear young lady?”
‘But he sounded just a little too kind. He overdid[679] it.
“I was silly[680] and I went into the empty wing[681],” I answered. “But it is so creepy[682] that I was frightened and ran out again. Oh, it’s so dark and quiet in there!”
“Is that all?” he asked, looking at me hard.
“Why, what do you think?” I said.
“Why do you think I lock this door?”
“I really don’t know.”
“To keep people out who have no business there. Do you understand?” He was still smiling.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know…”
“Well, you know now. And if you ever put a foot in there again,” - his smile turned into a grin[683] of rage[684] and he glared[685] down at me like a demon[686] - “I'll throw you to the mastiff!”
‘I was so terrified I can’t remember what I did next. I suppose that I must have rushed past him into my room. I remember nothing until I found myself lying on my bed shaking all over. Then I thought of you, Mr Holmes. I couldn’t stay there any longer without some advice. I was frightened of the house, the man, the woman, the servants, even the child. They were all horrible to me. If I could only bring you down everything would be alright. Of course I could have just run away from the house, but my curiosity was almost as strong as my fear.
‘I quickly decided to send you a telegram so I put on my hat and coat, and walked down to the post office in the village. When I returned, I felt much better but as I came towards the door a horrible thought came into my mind: would the dog be on the loose[687]? Then I remembered that the only person in the house who could get near to the terrible animal was Toller and he was asleep, dead drunk.[688] I slipped in without anyone noticing and lay awake half the night. I was so happy at the thought of seeing you.
‘Mr Rucastle didn’t try to stop me coming into Winchester this morning but said I must be back before three o’clock. Both of the Rucastles are going out this evening so I must look after the child. Now I’ve told you all my adventures, Mr Holmes, and I’d be very glad if you could tell me what it all means and what I should do.’
Holmes and I had listened fascinated[689] to this extraordinary[690] story. My friend then stood and walked up and down the room, his hands in his pockets, and a very serious expression on his face.
‘Is Toller still drunk?’ he asked.
‘Yes. I heard his wife tell Mrs Rucastle that she couldn’t wake him up.’
‘That’s good. And the Rucastles are going out tonight?’
‘Yes.
