Chapter 68

MADINGLEY HALL, CAMBRIDGE, ENGLAND:

Brigadier General Andreas Rossi walked into the breakfast room and sat down at the table for two where Richards was already seated and sipping her morning coffee.

“Good morning,” she said with a hoarse voice.

“Good morning. A little ragged around the edges to start the day are we? How about some good news to brighten your dreary English morning?”

“Sure, my body always arrives ahead of my brain whenever I travel to Europe. My brain won’t arrive until later today. Anyway, go ahead and brighten things for me, sunshine.”

“Take another sip of coffee and let me get some food first.” Rossi walked over to the buffet and grabbed a traditional English breakfast for himself. English style bacon, scrambled eggs, mushrooms and tomato would do just fine, he thought.

Returning to the table with Richards, Rossi said, “I got a call in the middle of the night from one of our operatives. Conrad just killed one of his patients.”

“What? Did I hear you correctly? Conrad killed a patient?”

“And get this. It was one of our soldiers seeing him as a patient in his office in California. Can you believe it?”

“Who was the soldier?”

“Don’t remember his name. But he was stationed at Fort Hood. We should be able to duck any bad press and nail his ass now. He’s as good as toast. By the way, can you pass me some toast?”

Richards handed over the tray of toast and asked, “Well, that should make you happy.”

“Some slacker with PTSD evidently. Seems your fucking psychiatrist friend Conrad is evidently addicted to pain pills and our guy was supplying dope to him when Conrad would come around to Fort Hood to teach. Musta gotten greedy, maybe tried to blackmail the doc, and pow, he’s yesterday’s news. Anyway, Conrad is discredited and he’ll no longer be a thorn in our side.”

“Or a pain in the neck.”

“I was thinking he was a pain somewhere lower down on the anatomy. Goes to show that your psychiatrist colleagues and their leftwing political friends are useless and there’s no place for psychiatry in the military. We shouldn’t ‘treat’ cowardly bums, but just throw them out of the army before they infect everyone else.”

“Settle down, Andy,” Richards meowed as she stroked Rossi’s upper arm with her hand reaching across the table. “That’s more or less what we’re already doing by isolating psychiatric complainers in Warrior Transition Units, then discharging them, letting the VA deal with them. I’m seeing to that.”

“Meanwhile, I can’t wait to see Conrad arrested for violating his parole on our Federal espionage charge once the California cops slam his ass in jail.”

“No, I think we keep a low profile and let the California police handle it all by themselves for now. Murder with state jurisdiction trumps our bogus Federal espionage charge. We can keep tabs on the murder investigation by insisting on a joint task force with army criminal investigation command. Once they have Conrad in custody, we can take over whenever we want.”

“You’ve got a point there, Colonel Richards.
