The next day at work was a long day. Not for the first time that week, I found myself watching the clock during the afternoon, waiting desperately to leave. The Heather situation was boggling my brain, and I couldn’t concentrate properly on anything work-related, although I knew that when I went home, I would only sit and over-think there instead. It was bizarre, but now that I knew for definite that Heather was a murderer and behind bars, I somehow felt even worse than when she had been staying at our house. It was as though as soon as she had been proved guilty, I suddenly couldn’t see that being the case anymore.

Perhaps Caitlin was right, and I did just like to complicate things that were straightforward.

Caitlin seemed to be just as fidgety as me during the last hour, although I wasn’t sure why. I kept seeing her pick up her phone and check it with a frustrated look on her face. For the last couple of months, she had done nothing but stare dreamily at her phone as she read message after message from Roger, so I had no idea what the sudden change in her expression was all about.

As soon as home time officially hit, she got up to leave, and I began chucking files into drawers in an effort to follow her out. I didn’t want to hang around in here anymore today either.

“Are you up to much tonight?” I asked as I caught up to her at the door. “Have you and Roger got much on?”

It hadn’t escaped my notice that Caitlin had been very quiet about Roger for a full week at this point, ever since our trip to the lake in fact, and despite knowing that my question would possibly open up a whole torrent of stored information about their many escapades, I was so eager to talk about anything other than Heather that I was even happy to listen to endless tales about Rodge.

Caitlin’s face twisted in a way I had not seen for quite a while now. In fact, I couldn’t even remember the last time I had seen her frown in that unenthusiastic style. “I’m going to the ballet with Roger again,” she said blandly.

“I thought you loved going to the ballet with Roger,” I said.

Her face twisted even further. “It’s alright, I suppose,” she said.

“What about the hyperextension being phenomenal and all that?” I asked.

“Oh, that’s not a good thing, apparently.”

“Isn’t it?”

“No.” She shook her head firmly before letting out a great sigh. “I don’t know,” she said, “the ballet’s alright and everything, but...”

“But what?” I prompted.

“Well, it just never really seems to kick in. I keep waiting for all the action to start, and it just never seems to happen.”

I resisted the urge to laugh while she was down. “It’s the ballet,” I said. “How much action were you expecting?”

“Well, you think there’d be at least one big song and dance number,” she reasoned. “Something to get the audience
