All the same students rushed out of Professor Ezoril’s classroom and back to Professor Jera’s musty office, where she stood glowering at us from behind her lectern.

The robed woman refilled her mug from a jug under her desk as we filed in and found seats, then sat heavily and rested her feet upon the desk.

I slunk with Ephram along the wall as we made for the back and tried to avoid notice from either Erik or Crispus. I did not need any more jokes or insults aimed in my direction.

As I sat, I noticed a detail I’d missed before. One that drew me as a moth to a flame. One entire wall had been painted into a map labeled “Lands of the Western Empire.”

The moment I glimpsed those wonderful colors, which depicted mountains, and rivers, and cities, and Catalysts, I forgot everything else, and quietly rose to my feet so I could inspect it.

“That is where I am from.” Saghir stabbed a finger at a mountain range to the north of Hasra, where a large black star emblazoned with “Gateway” had been placed. The star sat between two ranges and led into a desert labeled “The Blasted Lands,” which was mostly desert but with lava and volcanoes near the center. Ominous.

“Please find your seats,” Professor Jera thundered, her voice magically enhanced. I left off my study of the map and reluctantly returned to the desk I’d chosen. “Ah, much better, thank you. I’m pleased to see some enthusiasm about our world, and I hope that curiosity extends to history, but there is a proper place for such inquisitiveness. Now then, I realize most of you are new, but not all, and so we will continue with the curriculum right where we left off.”

She moved to the board and picked up a piece of chalk, then began laboriously writing out the words “Hasran Settlement,” which she underlined, then she turned back to the class. “Who can tell me when our city was founded?”

No one’s hand went up, though Saghir whispered something under his breath I thought might have been an answer.

“No one?” The professor’s face fell. “Ah, well, I shouldn’t expect more. Remedying ignorance is my job, after all, but this will be quite the monumental task. The Hasran Settlement was first chartered during the height of Elentian power, long before the Fall bisected their empire with the Ashlands. You will simply love that chapter when we get there. Ash rained for a year and a day, sent by the Stewards as punishment for the Mad Emperor’s hubris. But I am getting ahead of myself, as I always do.”

She strode out among the students, which kept all of us paying attention as she paced up and down the rows of desks. “When Elentia founded Hasra, we were not only the largest settlement in the west but also the most powerful. We were intended to be a simple outpost to claim territory and to police the forgotten god, entombed under our very feet.
