Chapter Three
Back in Brennan’s car, Mason sat quietly as Brennan navigated the rain-drenched winding road that skirted the moors. He sensed Brennan was tense—not surprising, considering what they’d done tonight—and stared out of the window, anxious when another couple of vehicles swept past. His bravado in The Four Fiddles had come from somewhere deep inside him, a place he hadn’t known existed before. He put that down to Brennan being his mate, which gave him confidence and the ability to let brazen sentences roll off his tongue. It had taken all Mason’s efforts to hide his surprise at what he’d come out with. How he’d acted as though he was some hot-shot who knew what to do between the sheets he didn’t know. Instinct? Yeah, it had to be that too. He could only hope instinct led the way when the time came to actually fuck.
Brennan cleared his throat. “I’d take you to my place, but I reckon it won’t be long before someone shows up there when I don’t answer my mobile if they ring me. With you four gone, and that alarm going off with no one to shut it down... Stands to reason if me and James aren’t at the compound and the other two techs are out-of-it drunk, that we had something to do with you breaking out.”
“Not necessarily.” Mason stared ahead at a set of high beams that seemed to pierce the darkness more brightly than the ones on the other cars had. He blinked, and a replica of the lights remained beneath his eyelids. It reminded him of pen-sized torches being directed into his eyes during the check-ups at the compound and he shivered. The sound of the wipers made a squeaking noise. “We could have taken you with us, forced you to leave. Or we could have broken out and you’re searching for us. They’re not to know for certain that you’re involved until the police come knocking on our doors—and the police might not even tell them who tipped them off.”
“I suppose. Maybe I’m just worrying too much.” Brennan sighed, swerving the car to the left a bit to allow the oncoming vehicle room to pass. “I told myself in the pub that you could all get on with things fine on your own. You all watched enough documentaries to get you by, and Dex is with James, George with the wolf shifter. So there’s only Joey with no known whereabouts. Fuck, I should have tried to find him before we left the pub.”
“Joey is more resourceful than you give him credit for. I tell you, he could fight his way out of any confrontation, no problem. He’s got a seriously mean kick on him.” Mason turned to look at him.
“Yeah, I get that he’s able to care for himself, but...” Brennan took one hand off the steering wheel to shove it through his hair. “Trouble is, guilt is nagging at me.”
“In what way?”
Brennan lowered his hand back to the steering wheel and veered around a bend.
