Part III

Christopher in his tweed brown suit made to step forward when Pierce’s burly arm shot out, stopping him in his tracks. Sawyer placed a hand on my lower back and ushered me towards our table behind the railing. “Let’s get situated,” he whispered, standing between the opposing party and me as he directed me through the gate and my seat. Only he didn’t take his seat next to me. Sitting his things down on the table, he spun with embellishment, clapping his hands together. “Pierce and Christopher, how nice to see you both again. And how much nicer to see you here… in court.” He smirked, tilting his head. Cringing, I slunk down in my seat. Thank god he at least had the decency to stash me in a safe place while he got on with his inevitable theatrics.

“Sawyer Prince,” Pierce’s deep voice echoed and I couldn’t help my curiosity, I turned to sneak a peek. His arms were cross over his barrel chest. His black hair slicked back. He was around the same height as Sawyer, they were both tall as hell, but Pierce was wider with thick muscles, while Sawyer had a more athletic and lean build. “I thought petty divorce court was beneath you, brother,” Pierce rumbled.

“That’s debatable… whereas what’s not up for debate is what in fact was beneath you last night… Stepbrother,” Sawyer glanced at me before grinning at my ex and his attorney. I turned ten shades of red and wished I could evaporate.

Christopher shot Pierce a quizzical and angry glance while Pierce straightened his tie and casually glanced back up. “Seems like I did in one night what you couldn’t manage to do in what, ten years?”

There were muffled sounds of feet scuffling and men huffing when the door burst open and a stalky bailiff walked in. “Please rise for the honorable Judge Fisher,” he boomed. Sawyer appeared beside me while Pierce and Christopher took to their table several feet away from us.

“Real mature, Sawyer, oh my god-”

Sawyer huffed a whisper. “That was nothing,” he smirked.

The judge sat and so did everyone else, so I followed suit. Judge Patricia Fisher looked to be middle-aged with coarse red hair and thick glasses. She shuffled some papers and announced, “We’re here for the dissolution of marriage between a Mr. Christopher John Beckett and Mrs. Vivienne Pearl Beckett.” She looked down, surveying us, and squinted behind her glasses. “I never thought I’d see you two in the same courtroom again after the fiasco with the Parson case several years ago… I trust you boys will be on better behavior today?”

“Yes, Your Honor,” Pierce replied while Sawyer quirked an eyebrow at him.

Judge Fisher narrowed her gaze on Sawyer, and he smiled. “Your Honor, I am always on my best behavior.”

Judge Fisher and I both snorted at the same time.

Sawyer stood, grabbing a manila folder. “Permission to approach?” He asked and stepped forward when she nodded. “Your Honor, before we begin, I’d like to file an emergency restraining order against Christopher Beckett.
