The moment she stepped through the door, a hand grabbed her by the hair and dragged her into the living room, the owner of it screaming profanities and names at her. She cried out and struggled as she was pushed onto the couch.

Her eyes caught sight of her mom standing near the table, avoiding eye contact. Kathie looked up at her stepdad; his face was bright red, and his fists were clenched.

“Filthy—” He smacked her. She let out a cry and covered her face. “Do I look like I can care for another cur?” He directed that at her mother.

Her mother shrunk back and shook her head, tears glinting in her eyes.

“This is how you repay me? I paid your debt, and now we scrape by, and you go and get yourself pregnant. Did you think you’d leech off me more? Well, you’re wrong. I won't be having a child of a whore live here. You’ll get your stuff and get out of here.”

Tears streamed down Kathie's face as she looked to her mother for some defense, but her mother refused to look at her.

Kathie’s fists clenched as she trembled and stood. “Fine,” she whispered, then walked slowly to her room.

“You better be gone before the morning, or I’ll drag you out myself!”

Kathie didn’t offer a response. Closing the door, she bolted for the closet to hide and cry.
