Pari passu, is love an instinctive bio-chemical ritual?

Is it a learned behavior, an agreement on its nature reached in the context of social discourse? Is it laden with preconceived ideas?

Must we not ask ourselves what we seek?

It seems eminently plausible that the pursuit of both love and truth has an evolutionary role for mankind. It enables us to create, to regenerate—to survive. Yet the individual, who dares dwell on such issues, may be blighted by cruel and unsettling doubts and dilemmas.

Naguib writes on Kamal, ‘. . . He seemed to believe that truth would always be cruel. Should he adopt the avoidance of truth as his creed?3’

Is there a choice here, or even the necessity of one? Endless questions arise. We flounder in desultory turmoil. The answers like truth and love, flirt with us; move beyond our grasp like a wily enchantress: like the brilliant flashes of a gossamer sensuousness it allures us, drag us into infinite regress. We lose ourselves in the labyrinth of delusions.

The rapture may renege; the infatuation may turn into an existential angst. Should we then hoist this burden and totter on?

Kamal reflects, ‘The problem is not that truth is harsh, but liberation from ignorance is as painful as being born. Run after truth until you are breathless. Accept the pain involved in recreating yourself afresh. These ideas will take a lifetime to comprehend, a hard one interspersed with drunken moments . . .4’

Once he had reflected on love, ‘. . . I don’t understand its essence and I know nothing comparable. I often wonder if it’s not the shadow of a much greater magic concealed within her . . . 5’

. . . It seemed as if he were speaking about truth!
