To Bohemia

Antigonus delivers the baby to the shores of Bohemia and is killed and eaten by a bear. The stage direction – ‘Exit, pursued by a bear’ – has become famous, its pithiness celebrated. The moment itself has a less glorious history, and is generally risible. We chose to leave it to sounds, to the panic in Antigonus’ eyes (Jonathan Nibbs again) and to the power of the audience’s own imagining. At least one critic – John Peter in The Sunday Times – felt short-changed, but I would do it again.

The child is discovered by an old shepherd, who finds that Antigonus has left with her a considerable sum of gold, together with some jewels. There is then an interval of sixteen years, as the child grows up as the shepherd’s adopted daughter.
