ON THE SCREEN

Nine silent versions were made between 1902 and 1926. Of the memorable television versions, five were made for the BBC after 1947, culminating in the Jonathan Miller production (1980) with Warren Mitchell (Shylock) and Gemma Jones (Portia). Most impressive was Jonathan Miller’s television adaptation of his National Theatre stage production (1970), with Laurence Olivier as an Edwardian Shylock whose off-screen wailing after his final exit gave his agony an indelible poignancy. Frank Finlay’s Shylock for BBC TV (1972) was seen as significant in touching the role with comedy, so sharpening the question about the place of the play in the post-Holocaust world. Trevor Nunn’s National Theatre production, with Henry Goodman as Shylock, was intelligently filmed for television. Michael Radford directed an opulently photographed Hollywood film in 2004, with Al Pacino as Shylock and Jeremy Irons as Antonio.
