The next day at school we didnât see Miss Vulpes. Our next biology lesson was in a few days, and Iâd decided that instead of going to the lesson, Iâd visit the school nurse just before, pretending I was unwell. As a half-demon, my body temperature is pretty high anyway, normally 40â42, so it would be easy to get signed off.
That evening the six of us walked the two miles to the funfair together. We could hear the music from a mile away and our anticipation was building as we got closer to the noise. Laser lights lit up the evening sky like fireballs. Fragments of laughter, mingled with indistinct music, were carried on the gentle evening breeze.
We walked through the entrance, to the aroma of hotdogs, burgers and onions, mingled with the sweet smell of toffee apples, candyfloss and popcorn. The jumble of sounds all merged together too: laughter, chatter, screams, announcements over the loudspeakers, and booming music. The noise was deafening to my sensitive ears, and the sensory overload made me cringe. Leo looked at me with a grimace, but we both became accustomed to the aural attack, eventually. The atmosphere was electricâthe fair was colossal. Adults and children milled about, chattering happily. Brightly lit, peaked tent tops hosted every game you could think of, and there were different rides everywhere.
âWow!â Eve screeched. âLetâs go on the Ferris wheel. Itâs the biggest one outside of London.â
Looking across the funfair from the top of the Ferris wheel was impressive. The people below us looked like ants milling about, and we had a birdâs-eye view of the whole area. After the Ferris wheel, we wandered around taking in the atmosphere of the fair and stuffing our faces with hotdogs, burgers and doughnuts. We could hear long, loud screams high up in the sky as the twirling, looping rides span people faster and faster and higher and higher.
Next came the waltzers. Huge. Mistake. The five of us got into the tub-shaped car, which was mounted on an undulating platform. Eloise declined. It was dark inside, with neon strobe lights flashing on and off. Hardcore techno-type music blared from the speakers.
To begin with, we were spinning around gently and all laughing, when all of a sudden over the speakers, a booming voice said, âThe louder you scream, the faster you go.â
A good-looking young guy then appeared and started pushing our car around and around, faster and faster. The girls screamed their heads off, laughing hysterically. Harry, Leo, and I clung on for grim death; Iâm pretty sure we all turned green.
At last, the ride slowed and stopped.
âJesus, that was horrendous. Iâm gonna barf that burger back up,â groaned Harry, as we all wobbled into the fresh air, feeling dizzy and sick to our stomachs.
âNever again,â moaned Leo.
âThat was such fun,â Eve squealed.
âYouâre not right in the head,â I grumbled.
âHello, Quinn, Leo, Harry.â I shook off a shiver and turned around to see Miss Vulpes right behind us.
I got goose bumps up my arms, but Leo grinned like an idiot and swooned, âHi, Miss Vulpes.
