~ Twelve ~

ROXIE SHIFTED HERSELF and Mary to the sidewalk across from the park where Mary had been snatched. There she witnessed a mob scene around a collection of individual garda of different ranks, each busy and absorbed surveying the scene for evidence.

She bent and, touching Mary’s face, said, “Secret now …”

“Yes, but how did you do that? How did we get here?”

“Science … way advanced science.” Roxie laughed and pulled on her hair. “Now where is your mother in that mob?”

Mary pointed out her mother, who was giving a report to a tall investigator taking notes. Roxie frowned. She had to personally deliver Mary to her mother—she just had to put the little girl safely into her mother’s arms—but she didn’t want to get caught up by the garda.

This was going to be tricky. She slung her tote bag over her shoulder, looked at her disheveled clothing, and made up her mind. This would have to be a quick in and out. She looked around once more and, screwing up her mouth, hoped that all eyes would be on Mary once she was delivered and that she would be a forgotten face in the crowd.

She couldn’t, even to save herself, allow little Mary to walk into that mob scene alone. Roxie took her hand and led her to the crowd, where she pushed her way towards the mother.

Her mother spotted Mary at once and charged at her, picking her daughter up and hugging her as the crowd surrounded her. The crowd screamed, and the garda put up their hands, trying to restore order.

What few people who might have seen her with Mary would soon forget. Right now, all attention was centered on the child safely returned to her mother.

Roxie shifted back to the loft.

Chase had traveled vamp speed back to the loft, washed up, and tried to sort out his thoughts. What was wrong with him? It felt like all the principles he held dear were falling away. He had always been a ‘black and white’ rules, ‘focus on the bottom line’ guy, but now, now everything had dipped into shades of gray.

He wanted Roxie—that was the bottom line. Everything about her called on everything he was. The lie between them no longer mattered. He had always understood the why of it—but he had stubbornly been reluctant to accept a mate who might do it again. Apparently, he no longer had a choice. Everything he wanted—she was. The real bottom line was this: his heart and soul yearned for Roxie MacBran and no other.

She was courageous, she was soft-hearted and funny, and damn, he needed her for all time. She was his mate, and all at once the door opened and she was there…

Waiting for her just inside the loft was Chase. He was half naked, and the look on his face stole what little breath she had left and then slammed it back into her so she felt she was gulping air.
