“DID YOU find out anything?” Shadow plopped down at his office desk, eagerly digging into the bags waiting on him.

Mace shook his head. “I spoke with several of the omegas today. They don’t recall anyone or anything out of the ordinary. Nothing at all.” He pulled out his Styrofoam container and a drink. “People are worried and we can’t find a single lead.” He sighed in exasperation and weariness. They’d exhausted all their options and themselves in the process, and were no closer to finding the culprit than the first day.

“At least everyone is more observant. That’ll help.” Shadow swallowed and forked another bite of steaming beef. “I told those at the emergency meeting that we’d narrowed down the list to a handful and were watching them like hawks.”

“Why did you do that?” Confused, Mace couldn’t see the reason for the small fib.

“To make the guy nervous, more paranoid even. Maybe if he thinks we’ve got him on the watch list, he’ll either stop or screw up.”

“He’s not going to stop. Why should he? If this boils down to revenge, he’ll feel obligated to even the score. He’s obviously not in his right mind to do these things, so rational thinking may be beyond him.”

“So we have everyone on ultra-alert and keep checking back to make sure we didn’t miss anything, and wait for him to act out again.”

“I’ll talk to the victims again tomorrow. See if they recall anyone who might be upset with them, even in the slightest. We can compile a list of names, then cross-reference them. At least that might give us a direction.”

“Good idea.” Shadow forked another large bite, eating with enthusiasm.

Watching his partner inhale the food made Mace frown. “Do you ever eat?”

Shadow spared him a glance. “Sometimes. Lately it’s been hit and miss.” He took another bite and swallowed. “Thanks for bringing this, by the way.”

Mace processed the information quickly. Just as he suspected, Shadow spent all his time working and little taking care of himself. “Do you ever cook?”

“More than a frozen dinner?”

With an amused grin, Mace dug into his own meal, a bit slower than his partner. “Your mother doesn’t bring food over for you?”

The alpha snorted. “She used to. Then decided when I hit one hundred and two years old, I should be able to care for my own needs.” A warm chuckle escaped, then Shadow smiled, a brilliant glow that made him all the more handsome.

Mace joined in. “You need a keeper.”

“Signing up for the job?”

His heart picked up speed at the invitation. Tilting his head this way and that, he tried to decide if Shadow was serious or simply flippantly tossing out rubbish. Uncertain, he opted for the middle road. “I think I already did. Over a week ago.”

Shadow’s expression grew serious. “You’re doing a great job. The budget and security plans are perfect, thanks to your ingenuity and foresight. You’ve been working your ass off. I know I don’t say it enough, but thank you.”

Mace inclined his head.
