They both jumped, then saw it was only Joe, standing out there like a drowned rat.

Sam rolled her window down and said, “You scared the shit out of me, Joe! What is it?”

The old man’s eyes were wide but clear. “I remember where I saw the van!”

Sam said, “Okay, where?”

“It was here! Right here!”

Sam glanced over at Zachary and said, “We kinda figured that much out. Jump in. We’ll give you a ride back to the house.”

Joe slid into the rear seat and looked around while he squeezed rainwater out of his hair and beard.

“Ain’t this something?” he said, staring at the artwork inside Sam’s Bug. “Reminds me of the Summer of Love. In more ways than one.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yes ma’am. Best days of my life. San Francisco, back in ‘67. You kids know what I’m talking about?”

Sam smiled. “As a matter of fact, I do.” Then she flipped on the stereo and fiddled with her phone until Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” erupted from the speakers.

Sam glanced over in time to see Zachary staring wide-eyed at her stereo.

“What’s the matter?” she asked. “Not your thing?”

He looked at her and grinned. “No. This is totally my thing. I’m surprised it’s your thing!”

“Not as surprised as I am that it’s your thing!” she said.

She glanced in the rearview mirror and saw Joe leaning back in his seat with a huge grin on his face.

After they pulled into the driveway of the house on Trellman Place, Joe slowly climbed out and, still smiling, waved to them as he walked through the gate into the backyard.

Back in the office, they dried off and then Sam used Rebecca’s computer to search through several news sites before finding what she’d been looking for. She angled the monitor toward Zachary and said, “This is what I was talking about.”

Zachary leaned over her shoulder and looked at the headline and the accompanying photo. “Local College Junior Still Missing.” The girl in the photo was blonde, fit, and pretty.

Without thinking, Zachary said, “She looks a bit like Rebecca, don’t you think?”

Sam stared at the picture and tapped her lip with a pen. “A bit,” she said. “And now that you mention it, so does that sex doll.”

Zachary felt a leaden weight sinking in his gut. “Click on that link. The ‘Related Articles’ one.”

Sam did. A list of other stories popped up. Zachary saw one that read, “Police suspect foul play in missing couple case.”

“Click on that one.”

The page loaded, displaying the story and its photo.

“Holy shit! Look at them. At her.”

Sam leaned forward.

“Damn. Looks like our killer definitely has a type.”

Zachary nodded. The woman in the photo, though a little older, was also blonde, fit, and pretty. And she bore more than a passing resemblance to their co-worker and Zachary’s crush.

“When was this?”

“Last week.”

“Shit.”

Sam took a deep breath and looked at Zachary. “We have to do something.”

“Agreed,” Zachary said. “But what?”

“We could start by searching Kyle’s Jeep.”

“What? How?”

She thought for a minute, then said, “He has to bring the truck keys over anyway, right? I can hide outside.
