Chapter Twelve

Ava

What the fuck just happened? I hurry out of Ebon Hall and drop my phone twice before I can get my hands steady enough to text Sasha. “Where are you?”

He responds right away. “Research library. 2nd floor. Back.”

“He said what?”

Several students shush us from the other side of the table.

Sasha grabs my hand and pulls me down the aisle, through the stacks, and into a hallway that leads to a row of soundproof listening booths that line the back of this section of the library. There’s room for two people in the booth, but just barely. He picks the corner booth and closes the door, pulling the shade to give us complete privacy.

“What did Stoken say to you?”

“He said that I need to bond with someone who has specific powers—someone they will choose—in order to use the book to send the signal. That they need to choose someone whose powers would help me to reach the others. I think he knows that I bonded already.”

“What? You told him?”

“No! I didn’t, but I think I panicked and he guessed. He told me to give him the name of my bond mate. I think he threatened me. He said he wanted the name and the book.”

“Fuck.” Sasha scrunches his forehead and rubs his face. “Okay. Look. He doesn’t know anything for sure, right? And he said bond mate? Singular?”

I nod quickly, sensing a tiny bit of a chance to cling to. I am so desperate for an answer to this.

“Okay, then he definitely doesn’t know there are five of us in this bond.” Sasha rubs his hands over his stubble. “We need to hide the Mithras Vox somewhere nobody can find it.”

“Agreed.”

He shakes his head. “I don’t get what’s going on with Stoken. None of this sounds right to me. It’s crazy. I don’t think you need to worry about the bond thing. It really isn’t that big a deal, and there is no way anyone can prove it, right?”

“You think?”

“Yeah. I do.” He rubs my arm reassuringly. “But as for the other thing, I don’t know anything about using the book as a beacon like that, but nothing I’ve read about bonds supports that you need to be bonded with another mage to harness their power. Nothing even hints at it. There are many ways for mages to join their powers together. It happens all the time. You don’t need the bond in order to do that. Stoken should know that. It’s not a thing. That’s not what the bond is for.”

“Isn’t that what Deitrich wanted, though?”

“Yeah, but not for that reason. From what we know, Deitrich wanted to take over everything. He wanted to lock in his position of power and control the magical world. Using our bond would help him do that, for sure. The bond enhances the power of each of the bonded mages. We take on parts of each other and can use that in our own magical practice. We’ve already started to see that. Like
