Chapter 23
âWHAT HAVE YOU BEEN doing?â
I searched my mind for a good excuse to tell him but, with the files in my arms, I couldnât think of anything but the truth.
âIâve been in your fatherâs office ââ
âYou did what?â He looked horrified. âAnd what do you have there? You canât just steal things.â
âI stole nothing.â I tightened my grip on the files. No matter what, Ren still saw me as the orphan girl who couldnât be trusted. âThese files are on me. He stole from me. Not the other way around.â
Ren huffed. âBut theyâre my ââ
âDonât even go there. There are private things in here. Photos. Notes. All about me. Iâm not leaving them sitting around for some lawyer to read through.â
Ren got up and stepped toward me. I stepped back, not sure what he intended doing, but I would not give up these files.
âYou didnât know this stuff was in there when you broke in, though. You couldnât have possibly known.â
âYeah. I didnât. But you know what? Heâs got a ton of files on you, too. And someone, your lawyers or whoever, will go through those files and read that information. You need to do something â take the files yourself and burn them or destroy them. Itâs better that no one else sees those files.â
âDid you read them?â
âNo.â
âDid you?â He glared.
I glared back with an intensity that totally triumphed over his.
âI said no.â
Right now, I did not want Ren in my room. I didnât want to have this conversation and I didnât even want to be in this house. I exhaled, figuring I should tell him the whole truth. He might be angry now but when he had time to consider things, heâd have agree that my idea was best.
âRen, thereâs a reason Iâm doing this. I want to help you. I want to find your mother.â
âWhat?â The anger flashing in his eyes scared me. That was an intensity I couldnât win against.
âIf your mother is alive, she can claim the estate. Sheâll be able to return here and, as the next of kin, she can restore your fortune, pay for your tuition and all that. Iâm sure the only reason she left was because she was scared of your father. Now, heâs gone and she can safely return.â
The color of Renâs face and the way that his nostrils flared screamed that he didnât agree at all.
âDo not interfere.â He walked to the door. âThis is none of your business.â
âIt is my business.â I grabbed him. âThis isnât fair. I need to make this right. I need to do something to fix things.â
âNo. You. Donât.â Ren shook loose from my grip. He wasnât the same person whoâd kissed me in the garden earlier. He wasnât the boy Iâd joked around with or whoâd been caught up in studying all afternoon. Ren had become a stranger. âIâm fine with things the way they are. Itâs not your place to interfere with my family. If my mother cared...â
âBut...â
âJust stay out of my sight for the rest of the time youâre here.
