CHAPTER TWENTY

I rolled away quickly as Morgana threw another ball of cackling dark energy at me.

Thorn were furiously battling the last ninja, while I focused on Morgana.

The witch grinned at me, and I saw all three mouths stretch wide across her three faces. Her right head had grown back on her shoulder, and was chatting excitedly about how to drain my blood to fill the cup.

“The cup needs blood...”

“Young blood,” the left head answered with a slight frown. “This one isn’t young enough.”

“But her blood holds more power than the blood of a hundred human children...”

“A hundred innocent souls...”

“From Linville, Stone Creek and Meadowford...”

I shook my head, trying not to listen to the creepy, disturbing conversation between Morgana’s two babbling heads. The middle head was the only one who wasn’t talking.

What they were saying sent chills down my spine.

There really was a blood ritual to be performed to activate the magical powers of the cup.

And it involved sacrificing one hundred innocent children.

“Give me the cup,” I said. “It must be returned to the museum.”

Morgana’s two heads stopped talking abruptly and stared at me.

“She wants the cup, sister,” the right head whined.

“She can’t have the cup!” the other head shrieked.

“The warlocks will be delivering the children...”

“There will be blood. The cup will overflow with blood once more!”

I pointed my flaming sword at Morgana. “Is that what you’re going to do? Kill a hundred children and fill the cup with their blood?” I couldn’t keep my voice from shaking.

Morgana smiled. “I serve the General. And the General’s orders are to do whatever is necessary to activate the powers of the cup. I am only carrying out the General’s orders.”

“You really are a monster.” I raised my sword and returned her smile. “And I slay monsters.”

“Do you now, little girl?” Morgana taunted. “Well, I’ll make you a deal. If you can defeat me, I’ll let you have the cup.”

“I don’t make deals with monsters.”

I lunged at her and managed to slice across the back of her hand.

Morgana let out an enraged cry and three pairs of emerald eyes locked on me.

“I will destroy you, Sadie,” Morgana hissed.

“But the General wants me alive,” I sang. “You have to obey the General’s order, don’t you?”

I laughed when Morgana let out a howl of rage and blasted a ball of fire at a tree. The tree cracked and toppled onto the road, very nearly squashing me beneath its massive frame like a bug.

“Don’t take your anger out of the poor trees.” I shook my finger at her. “I am right here, aren’t I? Come on and fight the little girl in front of you.”

I gripped my sword with both hands and prepared to swing.

Morgana rushed me and I swung my sword at her.

She twisted away and I scored a shallow cut on her forearm.

Screaming, the witch yelled a spell and a large crack opened up in the middle of the road, separating me from Thorn.

“Sadie!” Thorn yelled when he saw what was happening.

“I’m okay,” I shouted. “I’m fine, Thorn.
