CHAPTER 20

Ricky

He’s never looked this good, this healthy. Not since he’s been locked up, anyway.

Hunter walks over and I nearly go for his hand, forgetting the rules. The guard with his eyes glued to us would’ve been more than happy to remind me, though.

“Damn, man. I see somebody’s been hitting the weights,” I tease, thinking back on the last time I visited. Right before leaving for Puerto Rico.

“Not much else to do with my time while I’m stuck in this shithole,” he says with a laugh.

“It’s good to see you.”

And I mean that. Before I left, every time I laid eyes on the guy, there were new cuts and bruises on his face. I didn’t have the means or the connections to protect him then, but I do now. So, orchestrating for some of our guys on the inside to look after him was a priority. And judging by the way he looks today, it’s working.

“You must be counting down the days until you get out of here.”

“Shit, forget counting the days. I’m counting the fucking hours,” he jokes. “The thought of sleeping in an actual bed and eating a real meal are what keep me going.”

“I hear you. I’m gonna look out for you once you’re released. There are a few favors I can call in to get you some work and a place to stay,” I share. “My cousin’s looking to fill some spots at his security company on the southside. He’ll overlook your record. Might be a good fit since you decided to turn into a fucking superhero while you’ve been in here.”

“Hell, if it pays, I’ll do it. Whatever it takes to not have to see the inside of this damn place again.”

I nod, still in awe of the one-eighty he’s done.

“But enough about me. Tell me about you! Last time I saw Blue she said you’ve got a kid on the way?”

I smile a bit, thinking about it. “It’s wild, man. Got to hear the heartbeat earlier today. Made that shit feel real as hell.”

“Know what you’re having yet?”

I shake my head. “Not yet, but my gut’s telling me it’s a girl. But honestly, I’d be happy either way.”

“Never thought I’d see the day.”

“Shit, you and me both,” I say back. “But you said Blue’s been by, who else pops in?”

Hunter leans back in his seat and rubs his chin. “Scar’s here so much, you’d think she’s doing a bid,” he jokes. “Ever since she got her license, she treats visiting me like her new pastime.”

That doesn’t sound like her. “She okay?”

Hunter shrugs. “Mostly, yeah. But our dad’s in a relationship, so Scar’s been in her feelings about that. She gets along with the chick well enough, but I think it’s more an issue of Mike finally getting his shit together, and now having to divide his time between the girlfriend and Scar. She’ll eventually get over it, but until then, she just keeps showing up here like a lost puppy.”

Hunter’s smile dims and I know he worries about her.
