Chapter Thirteen – Jacuzzi

‘WHAT? YOU WANT to fly to Algiers tonight?’ Patrick was horrified at Sonja’s idea. After a night in the desert, he was looking forward to a night in bed – and soon. ‘It’s dark already ... What about the takeoff?’

‘It is possible easily. We have good lights on the Pilatus for the takeoff and I can get Henri to mark the runaway far end with car headlights.’

‘But aren’t you tired after today? We need to rest before such a long flight. You girls also need a bath to get rid of that kerosene – you got the worst of it standing underneath the wing. I’ll be OK – I didn’t get any in my hair.’

‘Maybe time for a quick shower. I’m not tired. I don’t know when doctor will come, but I’m sure he will say it’s not good for Otto to stay here – he must go very soon to modern hospital in Algiers ... I have even better idea – to get Otto flown from there to France quickly. This may be possible. I call Claude again from call centre in town.’

‘OK then, Sonja, if it’s for Otto, I’m for it ... Go off and get that call done. I’ll organise the fuelling and get the paperwork sorted while you’re gone.’

‘I go now then.’ She bent and kissed Otto but after a fresh dose of painkillers, he was unconscious again.

Patrick joined Sonja in the airfield’s fuselage-shack to sort out the refuelling. Sonja was speaking to Henri in French. Patrick couldn’t follow much but was surprised to hear “satellite-phone” and then: “jacuzzi”.

‘How nice! Henri has just offered me the use of his satellite phone at his house and his jacuzzi for Lucy and me to wash our bodies before we go.’

‘How nice,’ said Patrick, trying to signal his distrust of the offer with his eyes while Henri was still listening.

Sonja got the message. ‘Lucy will be fine with me – and in the big tub we will be together. You can keep eye on Otto while his “nurse” away. We not be long.’

The doctor arrived just after they left but did not speak much English.

Otto stirred awake as his foot was inspected. The doctor spoke good French, so was able to converse with his patient. Soon Otto was a lot more comfortable in the cabin with a mattress and blankets that the doctor organised for him.

With the wound carefully cleaned and dressed, the doctor had done all he could do in this desert town, it seemed.

Otto produced a hundred dollar bill from somewhere and the doctor left with a smile.

‘What’s the verdict, Otto?’

‘Bullet pass right through foot. Metatarsal is chipped – maybe other bones too ... Must get to good hospital in Algiers ...’ The effort of speaking was too much for him. He closed his eyes.

‘We’ll get you there, old mate. We’re going to fly all night. You’ll be in a good hospital tomorrow.’

But Otto was asleep again.
