“Damn!”

Steve Burgess was in a state of agitation.

“Shit!” His agitation climbed to new heights, as he tossed papers aside in his increasingly desperate search.

“I don’t believe this!” he fumed, “I could’ve sworn I put it on my desk!”

His efforts to locate the missing item were being made tougher by his haphazard approach to the problem and his mounting frustration was not helped when the ‘phone rang.

He retrieved it from beneath a pile of scattered documents.

“Yes?” he snapped.

“Steve Burgess?” the well-spoken woman at the other end asked.

“Who wants to know?”

“My name is Deborah Curtis and...”

“Look, I’m rather busy at the moment and I don’t want double glazing ...”

“I’m not ...”

“... or any other bloody thing you might be selling.”

“Whoah,” Deborah said softly, “I think you need to calm down as I have something important to tell you.”

Burgess had had enough of this. He was losing valuable searching time.

“Oh, is that so? What is it, an offer to represent my civil action over an accident I haven’t had? The news that I’ve inherited a fortune which will be released to me as soon as I have sent you a grand?”

“My word Steve,” Deborah cooed, “you are so suspicious.”

Hardly noticing that the caller was already addressing him on first name terms, Steve decided to give her one brief chance to explain what the hell it was about before putting down the receiver.

“All right, what is it then? I really am pushed for time, you know.”

“I know, you said,” Deborah affirmed. “I thought you would want to know that I have something of yours, something that you may have mislaid.”

The memory stick!

“You’ve got my memory stick?”

“That’s right, Steve. I found it yesterday in the Costa Coffee on the High Street. I guess it fell out of your pocket.”

Relief and apology wrestled for centre stage in Steve’s mind.

“I’m really pleased that it’s turned up and, er, sorry for being so snappy with you.”

“I understand you being upset,” her soothing reply nestled in his ear, “especially if you had sensitive information stored on it.”

As the penny dropped, indignation pushed apology and relief out of the way. “Wait a minute,” Steve said, “are you telling me you’ve opened my documents? If so, you’ve got no right to.”

Deborah maintained the same, soft calmness in her reply, “It was the only thing I could think of, to ascertain ownership of the device. Fortunately, I found your contact details on the first page of one of the documents, which is why I’m calling you, to arrange its safe return.”

“Fortunately?” Steve said to himself. He could see nothing particularly fortunate in his details being lifted from the cover sheet of a particularly raunchy short story he was hoping would be accepted by a publisher of erotica. What if this woman had gone beyond the cover sheet?! He urged himself to remain as cool as possible about the whole affair.

“Steve, are you still there?” Deborah enquired in response to the hiatus in their conversation.

“Er, yeah, I’m still here.
