CHAPTER THIRTY

James and Lulu were both in the kitchen preparing a meal when Sapphire arrived home. No, she could no longer think of it as her home. In an hour or so, she’d be gone, never to return. The adrenaline was still flowing but this time it resulted in cold, hard anger that fueled her determination to tell James what she thought of him before she packed the few things she had here, put Sparkle into her carrier and phoned for a taxi.

‘Hi, darling,’ said James over his shoulder as he stirred something on the cooker. He was wearing his apron again, but this time was fully clothed. She pushed the thought of never being able to hold that hard masculine body against her and feel his growing arousal, ever again. She would miss the sex, that was for sure. But hey—there were more selfish-bastard fish in the sea.

She didn’t reply but smiled at Lulu who was setting the table. ‘Hi, Sapphire,’ she said sweetly. ‘We’re having spaghetti carbonara. It’s one of James’s favourites.’

‘Hi Lulu.’ She was beginning to realise everything she was losing. She’d loved being with these two people. She’d started to believe they were a team—one that could live together happily and work together profitably and productively. Hopefully, she could still have that with Lulu.

‘Don’t I get a kiss?’ asked James. He hadn’t even turned around, and she knew he expected her to come to him, put her arms around his waist and press her body against him. She would have kissed his neck and maybe risked a quick feel of his growing erection if Lulu hadn’t been in the room.

James turned and looked at her for the first time. It must have been written all over her face.

‘Sapphire, what’s wrong?’ He frowned and she inhaled slowly. This wasn’t going to be pretty.

‘I had a visitor today.’ She tried to speak calmly and slowly, but her heart was beating out of her chest and she felt ill.

‘Oh? Who?’

Sapphire took the crumpled contract out of her bag and held it out to him. ‘She gave me this.’

James put the wooden spoon onto the counter and hobbled slowly towards her. ‘Ruth.’

‘Correct. She told me some interesting things.’

‘You do know, I assume, that she is a liar and a cheat.’

‘Takes one to know one.’

‘What’s that supposed to mean?’

‘I think you know.’ Her voice was starting to get louder and Lulu, who had taken over the sauce stirring, looked behind her in alarm.

‘Are you going to argue?’ she asked quietly.

‘No, of course not. Are we Sapphire?’ said James.

‘I’m leaving.’ They needed to talk in private. She couldn’t tear a strip off him with Lulu listening.

‘What? Why? Sapphire…’

She left the kitchen and James followed after her. He caught up to her at the bottom of the stairs as he could now work up quite a speed on those wretched crutches. At least he didn’t need help any longer. In fact, he was going back to the office on Monday. Oh God… how was she going to avoid him?

She ran up the stairs and he came after her.
