Chapter 16

How she got through the rest of the weekend while playing the contrite, dutiful wife, was a minor miracle in Savannah’s mind. She was visibly relieved when she opened her eyes on Monday morning and prepared for work.

By the time Blake had returned Saturday evening from visiting with his sister, she’d fixed a dinner fit for a king. Scented candles flickered throughout the house, soft music played in the background and she greeted him in a black lace thong and nothing else.

As she made wild, uninhibited love to her husband, in the back of her mind she thought that at the very least she’d wear him out so bad he wouldn’t have the energy for anyone else. Sunday, as usual, had been a breeze as Blake assumed his position on the couch.

“Good morning, Richard,” Savannah chimed as she walked into the office kitchen.

“Hi. You’re mighty chipper this morning. Have a good weekend?” He poured a cup of coffee and added enough sugar to go into shock.

Savannah watched and grimaced. “Can’t complain. And you?” She went to the fridge in search of some OJ.

“Went sailing with the family out on Sag Harbor.”

Richard was a frustrated sailor trapped in a lawyer’s body. Every chance he got, he was on the water in his boat.

Savannah poured a tall glass of juice. “Well, I’d better get busy. I have those briefs of yours to prepare.”

Richard checked his watch. “I have a discovery hearing to attend at ten. Hopefully it won’t take too long. We can go over the brief when I get back.”

“I’ll be ready.” She took her glass and headed to her desk. Besides preparing a brief she had other things on her agenda.

Savannah worked feverishly for two hours. Finally the brief was completed, checked and rechecked. She printed out all of the supporting documents and put everything in a folder just as Richard returned from court. She held up the folder with a triumphant grin.

Richard took the folder. “Gotta hand it to you, Savannah, you are the best. I’ll take a look and we can review, in say, about a half hour.”

Savannah stole a quick glance at the overhead clock. Eleven. “Sure.”

He tapped the folder against the desk then walked away to his office. The instant he was out of earshot, Savannah picked up the phone and dialed. Her heart hammered in her chest.

The phone rang twice before it was picked up. “Montgomery Enterprises.”

“Good morning. I was hoping to speak to Ms. Montgomery.”

“I’m sorry, Ms. Montgomery is busy. I’ll be happy to take a message.”

“I’m sure she’ll want to speak to me. I’m Mrs. Fields, wife of Blake Fields, the architect on the Brooklyn project.”

“Please hold. I’ll see if Ms. Montgomery can be disturbed.”

Savannah tugged on her bottom lip with her teeth as she waited for what seemed an eternity.

“Sarah!” Tristan’s voice trilled through the line.

“Savannah. Hello, Ms. Montgomery.”

“Oh, please excuse me. Why can’t I remember names? What can I do for you?”

“I wanted to personally call you and tell you what a wonderful time I had at your gathering on Friday.
