Chapter Sixteen: Something's Going on in the Town Square
Early the next morning, just as the sun was peeking over the horizon, Jason staggered back to the house he was sharing with the girls. His hair, face and clothes were all matted with sweat and ash. He stank intensely of body odour.
Lexi was waiting for him in the front living room. She was perched on the end of the sofa with her knees hugged tight to her chest. Her face held a worried expression and she looked tired. Polo slept soundly next to her on the sofa, pricking up his ears and giving a low growl when Jason walked in. Lexi rubbed his head gratefully. “Good boy. It's only Jason,” she said encouragingly before looking up questioningly at Jason. “How did it go?'
“We finally got it out. We couldn't save the barn though and half of their wheat crop is gone.”
“Are the kids all OK?” Asked Lexi tiredly, rubbing her sore eyes with the palms of her hands. She had stayed up all night on watch, just in case the gang of bullies decided to pay them another visit.
“Yep, just tired and dirty like me. They can't find their brother Kevin though. Really strange. They said he was there with them earlier.”
Lexi looked at Jason frowning, “Well, I'm pretty sure he was here. It looked a lot like him, though I can't be positive. Don't know them all that well,” she shrugged.
“Here? What do you mean here? Why wasn't he helping at the farm? What happened to you by the way? I thought you were coming to help with the fire?” Jason said accusingly, tilting his head slightly to the side and raising his eyebrows at Lexi.
“Yes I know we were. Something happened here that delayed us.” Lexi told Jason all about the dramas of the night before. He sat quietly listening to her story, his mouth hanging open in disbelief. When she had finished, he got up and started pacing up and down furiously with his hands clenched in tight angry fists by his side.
Lexi looked at him pacing up and down and thought he was angry at her for not helping him at the farm. She tried to explain her feelings. “I know I said I'd go and help with the fire, but Hadley was pretty scared last night and I didn't want to leave her here on her own. I must admit I was pretty shaken up too. I didn't want to step out of the house either, in case they were waiting out there.” She pointed to the front yard.
Jason stopped his pacing and looked up at Lexi's troubled face. “I'm not angry at you, Lexi! You had every reason not to want to leave. I'm just angry about Broc and that lot. What a bunch of dicks. Something's got to be done about them. They were the ones who started the fire at the farm too you know?”
“What!? I thought that was an accident!?” Her brow furrowed in concern.
