Chapter 33

Sheriff Riley walked into his office and shut his door. This last murder had turned the town upside down. The phones had been ringing nonstop since yesterday morning.

He just couldn’t see the connection between Brian LeBlanc and the previous victims. What were they missing? What connected these victims? Was it just something in the killer’s mind?

Feeling restless about this case, he left his office and went over to the conference room where Detectives Picou and Melancon were hard at work on this case. They had previously set up a murder board and laid out the cases to search for clues that they may have missed.

Melancon looked up from the file, “Morning, Sheriff.”

“How is it going?”

Melancon let out an exasperated sigh, “Mon Dieu, we have gone over everything with a fine tooth comb, but nothing links these victims together besides the fact that the killer believed they have sinned.”

Sheriff Riley scowled deeply as he stared at the boards, “But how in the hell was Brian LeBlanc guilty of gluttony? Everyone I have talked to was shocked about his murder. Unlike the others no one had anything bad to say about him.”

Melancon shrugged her shoulders, “That is why we are beating our heads against the brick wall. We are digging into his personal life the best we can, but so far we have come up empty handed.”

Sheriff Riley ran his hands through his hair, “This killer found out something about Brian LeBlanc that set him off. Dig deeper! There is something there. We just have to find it.”

Sheriff Riley walked over to the window and stared outside. He watched as people came and went from the courthouse and other businesses that made up downtown. The vendors were busy setting up for the lunch crowd. The killer was out there. Could one of these people be the killer? If so, what had suddenly set them off?

He turned back to Melancon, “We need to dig deeper into any newcomers. There haven’t been too many people who moved here in the last year or so.”

Melancon started taking notes, “I will have the computer techs get right on that. I can also have them run the names against those that had a personal grudge against Devareaux and Easterly just in case the other murders were to throw us off the trail.”

Sheriff Riley asked Picou, “What about witnesses? No one has noticed anything out of the ordinary?”

Picou admitted begrudgingly, “So far we haven’t been able to find any. No one noticed anything out of the ordinary that day or the days leading up to the murder. Hell, no one even noticed anything when the bodies were disposed of. It’s almost as if this guy is a ghost.”

He watched as the sheriff’s scowl deepened further, “Somehow this killer is finding out what these victims’ sins are. We have to figure out how he is learning the details of these victims’ lives. He knows more than even their spouses knew.”

Picou groaned, “Right now we are playing a waiting game and I hate waiting.
