CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Sure enough when the four of them returned to our table on the ground floor, the first words out of his mouth were, “You were supposed to get us another bottle of champagne.”

I’d already settled up, leaving big tips for all the girls. Jesus, a five-thousand dollar adventure. I’d overpaid to get that email sent, but the intelligence on the deal in progress with XCOSA was invaluable.

I looked over at Joanie who was looking at me anxiously. I gave her a quick smile and glanced in the direction of his phone. She nodded, looking at least a little relieved.

“I found your phone on the seat.”

“Well, aren’t you just a Helpful Holly?” He put the phone in his pocket and sat down heavily in his chair. “Let’s get another round, and when I’ve recovered,” he winked lewdly at Joanie, “maybe we can have a little more fun.”

“Actually, I think we’re going to have to get out of here,” I replied as Joanie nodded along.

He shrugged. “Whatever. And hey Kellen?” he paused for effect. “Turns out that contract was only the second most valuable thing I’ve taken you for this week.”

I could see the disappointment in his eyes when I failed to rise to the bait. I stood and took Joanie by the elbow and led her toward the door. Amber tagged along.

“You guys okay?” she asked in what seemed like genuine concern.

We both nodded curtly. Amber stepped in close and placed a piece of paper in my wife’s hand. “Call me,” she said as she kissed Joanie on the cheek.

Joanie turned toward me. “I need to tell you something.”

“It’s okay.”

“You know?”

I nodded. “I have to admit something too. Me and Jas….”

Before I could react, Joanie lashed out at me, her hand catching me flush on the cheek.

After the initial shock, I couldn’t help but laugh. Joanie seemed equally taken aback.

She put her hands to her mouth. “Oh God, did I just do that?”

It wasn’t completely clear to me what “that” actually referred to.

I paused to make sure she wasn’t going to hit me again. And then I took her hand, and gently led her outside… into the bright sunshine of mid-afternoon. Somehow that made all that had just occurred seem all the more seedy.

On the car ride home, Joanie stared out the window with a Thousand Yard Stare. I knew we needed to talk, but for right now, I was just as happy to have time to think as well.

I guess I’d always known the whole XCOSA deal was likely a pipedream. I’d fixated on it because coming at the same moment as the crisis with Joanie, it was something that I felt I could control. As it turned out, that had been an illusion. On the flipside, it also turned out that my problems with Joanie might have been more tractable than I realized. The past week suddenly seemed like a lot of misguided energy and misplaced priorities.

Though I could see Joanie struggling to process things, I knew she’d come around.
