When I Began to Listen to the Hunger

The first time I stepped back and really listened to the hunger came at a time when everything around me was falling apart. It was the first time I made a conscious connection to the fact that I had developed a habitual pattern of filling the spiritual emptiness in my life with food and men, a pattern that never failed to cause rapid weight gain and almost always precipitated a major relationship crisis, which I was in at that moment.

For me, the habitual pattern was losing weight, searching for a man, finding a man, falling in love with the man, getting engaged to the man, moving in with the man, discovering I wasn’t compatible with the man, and eventually breaking up with the man. Rapid weight gain always accompanied the last stage before breaking up, which would soon be followed by adopting another extreme diet where I would quickly lose weight and start the cycle all over again.

The only thing that changed over the years was the man.

Was it any wonder my son rebelled, finding his own acceptance in a culture of anarchy and drugs?
