What it was.

Early June 2019

Speed limits were more like a suggestion when you grew up in Seton-proper. Like washing your hands before dinner or not watching television right before bed—they existed as a recommendation only, designed to establish rules for the types of people who believe they reserve the right to ignore them.

So at night, the Seton kids sped down their roads and wove carelessly through their neighborhoods, with their seat belts off and their breaths wet with alcohol. And the local police, stationed in all their narky locations with their headlights off, would let them zoom past without even setting down their jelly doughnuts. Because they recognized the expensive cars as they went by, and smiled as they thought of the kids they belonged to.

On a night in early June, one of those cars belonged to Parker—a new, dark blue Ford F-150 that he handled like it was a dirt bike. And inside of that car, he had Britt in the front seat and Kelly and Bianca in the back while Michelle was out of town for the weekend at her grandmother’s eightieth birthday party.

The windows were down, and it was one of the few summer nights they had left before things would get hot and sticky and damp. Where they lived—not just Seton, but the whole geographical area—had the kind of summer humidity that made it feel like a cloud had drifted down to earth and swallowed everything, a suffocating wetness that warned of the storm that was always somewhere, waiting.

“What are you gonna get us to eat tonight, Parker?” Britt asked, one of her knees pulled to her chest, her black Chuck Taylor digging into the brand-new leather of her passenger seat. A skinny black headband contained her mane while a few mischievous curls dripped onto her face.

Parker smirked, one hand on the wheel as he rolled through a stop sign. “We haven’t even gotten there yet and you’re already talking about what I’m gonna feed you when we leave?” He glanced at her and was laughing before he could stop himself.

She laughed, too, helping herself to his phone in the cupholder as she scrolled the team’s playlist for the next song she wanted to hear. “Like you’re shocked.”

“I figured since this is at your man’s house, you’d at least want to stay for a little bit.” He was looking in his rearview now, looking at Kelly.

Kelly smirked at him skeptically. “He’s your man. I just kiss him sometimes.”

Bianca smiled proudly as Britt pressed Play on “Case of the Ex” by Mya and turned to face Kelly. “Fuck yeah,” she commended.

“Yeah, whatever, you little Power Rangers,” Parker dismissed. “Girl power, fuck guys, all that shit.”

“Ooh.” Britt winced, looking at him again, playful and mocking and addictive. “Someone’s sensitive tonight.”

“Maybe he misses Mich,” Bianca suggested, sliding to the edge of the back seat. She wiggled her taunting fingers into Parker’s ear to the beat of the song. He didn’t even flinch, used to their pokes and pinches.

“You better miss Mich,” Kelly declared.
