TWENTY-NINE

DAMIEN

The noise of the bar was drowned out by the pounding of my heartbeat in my ears as I saw Ashley closing in on Sophie. She stopped him dead in his tracks, just an inch away from a kiss, and after an awkward beat, he retreated.

I was ready to charge over, yank him back and throw him down, but I kept my feet planted, my fists clenched tight as a wave of anger washed over me. What the hell was happening?

I wanted to shout out my frustration, but instead, I watched him sheepishly smile, shake his head, and say something to Sophie. He then left the stool, tossed a few bills on the table, and headed for the exit.

Sophie didn’t keep track of him as he left. She let out a sigh and rubbed her temple. Maybe, once the green monster of jealousy had receded, I’d think about that, but right now, all I could focus on was him trying to kiss her. Another dude trying to get his hands on her.

A server approached the table and Sophie looked up, her usual warm smile lighting up her face as she interacted with the worker. The server nodded and took the money. Sophie tensed up mid-conversation, and my heart hammered against my ribs, realizing she had sensed me.

As soon as the server was out of the picture, Sophie scanned the bar, searching for me.

I stood my ground until she spotted me, then made my move.

The place was packed, and all I wanted was some peace and quiet with Sophie. She slipped off the stool, resting one hand on the table as she craned her neck back to lock eyes with me.

“What the hell was that?” I snapped, the harsh, accusing edge in my voice making me wince internally. I knew I should tone it down, but I was seething. “Is that why you’ve been distant with me today? Got something on with Ashley and didn’t want me getting wind of it?”

“Excuse me?” Her eyebrows furrowed, her cheeks tinting with indignation.

“I saw what I saw.” Yeah, I had seen it, and it had ignited a blaze of jealousy in me, turning me into an idiot. “Sophie, I...”

She jabbed a finger into my chest, cutting me off. “Yes, you saw him try to kiss me, and you saw me push him away.”

I caught her wrist, our eyes locked in a heated standoff.

“Fine,” I bit out, the words sharp and strained. “I’m jealous, alright?”

Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly, but she nodded in acknowledgment.

Slowly, our fingers intertwined. “Let’s check if our table’s ready.”

She remained silent as I led her towards the front of the bar. The other section of the place, separated by a half-wall, was manned by a woman in a black button-down shirt, a slim skirt and blood-red heels. She skimmed over the reservation list, making a slight face before glancing up at me. “Your table will be another twenty minutes.”

Screw this.

“Is the private dining suite booked for the night?”

She blinked in surprise.
