“You’ve taken care of a major problem for me,” Rudy Acres said as he met with Michael Yeager at a rural road side rest. “You’ve also had a chance to indulge in your favorite activity at the same time. Now, get McPherson. You’ve tried and failed once, but don’t fail again. I not only want him dead, I need him dead.”

“I’ll get it done. I have a plan—all I have to do is bait a trap.”

Rudy slapped his car’s steering wheel several times with the palm of his hand, “You had a plan last time but it didn’t work.”

“Shit,” Yeager said. “How did I know his dog was psychic?”

“That had better not be an excuse for a fuck up. I have no tolerance for lame excuses.”

“Don’t worry; I have a plan that will work well.”

“What is your plan and how does it work?”

“There will be a call for him that something was found at one of the former crime scenes and I’ll be waiting. I’ll be using a ghillie suit and laying low to the ground. I’ll use a handgun this time. It will be up close and personal.”

Rudy smiled, “Excellent. Splendid. Get it done.”

“I need to make it look like someone called in—they found something and only McPherson gets the message and comes alone. They’ll find him lying there dead as a doornail.”

“That’s where our friend Ron Bluhm comes in; he’ll deliver the message.”

“McPherson will come right to me. Make sure Bluhm gets the timing down—that’s the important part.”

“He will,” Rudy said. “He hates McPherson; he’ll deliver him right to you.” He then pushed the button to raise his window and drove off.

Yeager watched as Rudy drove off, “Don’t worry; I’ll get the job done. If you would just let me use McPherson’s girlfriend as bait, I would wrap this up in a heartbeat. But you put your restrictions on me.”

“How realistic do you want me to be?” John Knapp asked Monica, standing before him in his courtroom.

“Read it just like you would read it to someone you just sentenced to death,” Monica answered.

“Ok, let’s see how we can do this.” Judge Knapp looked over to a young man and said, “Mr. Marsh, I need you to stand beside Miss Shimas and act like you’re her lawyer. Mr. Binks, you’ll stand at the prosecutor’s table. You two, being law students, this will be good practice for you.” He looked at the bailiffs and said, “Is everyone ready?”

“We’re ready your honor,” one bailiff answered.

“Very well. Will the defendant stand.”

Monica and the two law students stood.

“If this was the real thing,” Judge Knapp said, “this would be a lot more emotional. I’ll proceed.” He looked at Monica, “This will feel strange saying this to a friend. Here I go. Having been tried and found guilty by a jury of your peers for the crime of capital murder, that same jury has recommended that the defendant, Monica Shimas, shall suffer the extreme penalty. It is, therefore, the sentence of this court that
