When Caroline saw Jeff Barber waiting for them at the hotel, she was shocked by his appearance. He was not the smooth sophisticated millionaire she had imagined. Looking at his scruffy beard, the tobacco dip in his teeth, and the sweat stains on his ratty t-shirt, she immediately regretted coming along.

Jackson had booked rooms at the historic Seelbach Hotel. From the elegant marble columns and Native American murals in the lobby, Caroline realized she would be spending the next few days in luxury. Despite the trashy appearance of his friend, Jackson earned some credit for his choice of accommodations.

To the right of the lobby was the hotel bar, a popular spot for live jazz according to the front desk clerk. Jeff came out of the bar carrying three drinks, one for each member of the trio.

Great, she thought to herself, realizing this would be a binge-filled reunion between Jackson and Jeff.

I’m sure glad I came along for this ride. At least I’m safe, for now.

She reluctantly accepted the drink from Jeff and took a sip, almost choking because it was so strong. Caroline was still reeling from the effects of the night before, and the last thing she wanted to taste was hard liquor.

“I’ll take this up to my room and finish it later,” she lied.

“Fair enough,” replied Jeff.

Jackson and Caroline found their adjacent rooms on the sixth floor of the hotel. Looking out her window, she could see the downtown entertainment district, highlighted by several restaurants, clubs, and bars.

She hoped she wouldn’t have to spend too much time down there. She wanted to stay away from public space, fearing that she would be vulnerable and easily taken by her enemies.

She also hoped Jackson wouldn’t be in any kind of danger here. She couldn’t hide the guilt she felt for bringing Jackson into her mess. She did, however, feel a little safer this far away from Warrenton.

The luxurious bathroom quickly caught her attention and before long, she was running the hot water for a relaxing afternoon bath.

After a call for room service, she slipped into the complimentary robe and ordered bottle of champagne on ice. She poured the rest of the drink Jeff gave her down the bathroom sink. It was terrible. If she was going to drink, it would be champagne today. One bottle and she would be good for the rest of the night. No worries in Louisville.

Jeff and Jackson sat opposite one another in the wing chairs in their hotel room. Since Jeff’s girlfriend had told him not to come back, he would be staying in the room with Jackson.

They had done it plenty of times before. On the road, playing golf on the mini tours, they would pile into the cheapest hotel room they could find, often sharing a double bed. It made for some epic stories, usually involving escapades with local women—all night on the town before the tournament the next day. That’s the primary reason Jackson never made it big playing pro golf.
