Use your imagination: Suppose you want to develop a fear of heights, acrophobia. You can start by imagining that you are falling. Close your eyes as you visualize yourself on a high mountain. Imagine that you feel the ground beneath your feet giving way, and visualize yourself falling through the air. Repeat this scene in your head over and over again until you feel it in your stomach.

In order to enrich your imagination, you will find that a library of reading material is helpful. Read all the news items you can find on air disasters and mountain accidents. Clip them, put them in a scrapbook or stick them on the bathroom mirror. With the combination of your own imagination and proper reading, you can scare yourself speechless within a few days.

The fear of heights will enable you to avoid all airplanes and mountain vacations and from going above the second floor in any building. If you really work at it, you can turn that fear into a reserve generalized fear—a sort of free-floating anxiety. You will be an anxiety attack looking for a place to happen. Then, when anything unpleasant faces you, you can produce a fear in order to avoid the occasion.
