When I came out into the sunlight and walked back to the main hospital entrance and smelt the green leaves, I felt faintly sick. Yet what I remembered was not the repulsion so much as the peace. I had not been consciously aware of it, but I had felt a deep peace towards the end. The dead were – still; in another place. They had shocked my heart into discarding all its rubbish, they had purified my heart of all the wants and desires that enslaved it most of the time, and as a result I had felt a peace that now revelled in the smell of summer.

I was fully alive, I felt the blue sky and the blinding sun to be wonderfully good, and full of a rich meaning. I loved life, for I saw it through my heart. I could not think of those dead bodies as useless material, as rubbish waiting to be burned – all that mattered was to live intensely, to enjoy life to the full. I noticed things out of the coach window, and when I got back to school I lunched alone and watched the cricket on television. It was the first day of the first Test between England and New Zealand, and I concentrated on every ball that was bowled. It was important.

Then I turned off the television and just sat quietly. I just sat and felt the meaning of life outside the window; which the reason makes us forget.
