They understood

how prayer has to exist

as the voice of causeways and edges

and lives in windows where there’s nothing

but coloured fragments of a day,

a hill growing out of a beach,

and the blue impossible sky

that’s always but not quite

out of reach.

Cancel the cleverness

That calls you free.

Discard the cheque-book,

The doubtful receipt.

All of your enterprise

Means your defeat.

Look back at history

As it pours into space

And into the mirror

Of your disgrace.
